Paul Reilly, PE, Engineering Services, aka Advanced Pool Engineering Ph 888 443-5050 Prestella Residence 96 Viewcrest, Oroville, Ca 95966 2007 CBC, ASCE 7-05 Swimming Pool Engineering 1.0 State of Service Page 1 The California Pool & Spa Industry Education Council, "California Swimming Pool Workmanship Guidelines" and other sources define the normal state of a pool vessel (shell) as filled with water. The 'dry' state of a shell is a short-term exposure and a service factor increase of 1.33 is appropriate. This service factor increase can been incorporated in the design calculations for shells that may be required to temporarily resist lateral earth pressure for maintenance. No active soil pressures are present during the construction phase. Shotcrete is typically applied directly to the face of undisturbed, firm native earth. Builder may 'flash' excavations with a thin layer of shotcrete to stabilize non -cohesive soils or may be used as a surface treatment to retard the loss of moisture from the walls of excavations in highly expansive soils, however, this treatment is non-structural. 2.0 Modes of Failure a. Buoyancy: a loss of serviceability can be realized if adverse buoyant forces act upon dry or partially empty shells. Water accumulation between the shell and the face of an excavated surface or a high water table can displace or float an empty shell. Specifications require the consideration of adverse hydrostatic forces and the inclusion of a means to relieve hydrostatic pressure behind/below all shells. b. Differential Subsidence: Loose embankment or unsuitable fill. Specifications require the placement of shotcrete against firm undisturbed soil. Soil compaction, 90% max dry density, conforming to ASTM D1557, is required for any earth fill sections placed below or about the shell. c. Differential settlement due to desiccation (soil moisture removed by trees or vegetation) is rarely encountered in forensic investigations. d. Differential Heave: Expansive soils or large trees/roots near a pool can cause damage to the pool or surface decking. Specifications require pre -saturation of all expansive soils prior to shotcrete. e. Rotation: Stemwall failure due to lateral bending is rarely encountered in forensic investigations. 3.0 Bond Beam The bond -beam on a pool vessel is typically the top of the pool shell, adjacent to the waterline tile. There are no significant lateral loads at the top of any cantilevered structural wall that resists static lateral loads. Details provide alternate sections for the bond -beam. The haunch, a widening or extension of the bond - beam has was introduced to accommodate precast coping and serves no structural purpose. A haunch should not be constructed if expansive soils or freezing environmental conditions exist without additional mitigation. 4.0 Model Notes A water filled shell cannot impose sufficient lateral force (outward) to overcome the passive resistance of a soil mass. The load case for an infinitely long pool stemwall (dry -state) provides the most conservative design assumption for reinforced concrete pool shells. Calculations present load cases for a primitive 'channel model' of the shell. Fundamentally, the 'channel model' for fluid infrastructure is subject to cantilever bending only. The opposing 'toe' cannot translate horizontally and an overturning failure cannot physically be realized on a channel structure or a poel• shell. However, the term overturning -moment (OTM) is used in the desgff calculations to provide a conceptual reference for the lateral force imposed on the various load cases. Simplified geotechnical soil models utilize an equivalent fluid pressure (EFP) to estimate lateral forces on subgrade structures and retaining walls. The EFP factor is a composite that considers both the unit weight of the retained earth and Ka, a component of the soil attributes used to estimate the resultant lateral force. EFP force models employed for retained earth yield conservative estimates of lateral force as both cohesion and mechanical interaction of material in-situ are disregarded. For primitive models of the soil -substructure interaction, the EFP component is truncated at the 45 -degree intercept to more accurately assess actual forces acting on the base section. Design calculations incorporate an interpolated linear reduction from the point of curvature to the 45 -degree intercept of the base section. Compressive forces imposed by the soil mass, acting tangent to the section of the distending stem, are disregarded in this analysis and have not been used to decrease net tensile forces in the reinforcement of the shotcrete'structural*system. - Net moment at base is EMx = OTM - RM, with YE = unit weight of earth, applied as an equivalent fluid pressure Fc Fc V OTM = YE h 6 RM = E x,w, Section: Conventional Retaining Wall h + Yr- 3 - YE 6 1 ! RM = 1:x^ Section: Distending Radius Foundation 5.0 Other Considerations Horizontal steel is disregarded for the typical design cases. Wall elements are considered of infinite length, normal to the line of imposed lateral forces. For shells with a rectangular shape (plan view) structural contributions from corner supports are generally disregarded. W, Most pool shapes could be classified as hyperbolic -paraboloids and have very high levels of structural redundancy. For circular, oval and free -form pools, a more appropriate model analysis would be related to the horizontal sections: compressive and tension states that may be resolved as hoop -stress. Compiling a submittal for the infinite combinations of cases for hoop -stress models is not practical for a standard plan. www The Swimming Pool Engineer com 2351 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 170.492. No significant loads occur at these features and the geometry and spacing of reinforcement may vary with manufacturer requirements or local trade practice. 7.0 Gravity and Surcharge Loads Pool Site: The weight of a swimming pool is approximately one-half the weight of the soil that has been removed to embed the pool. If soil or slope stability problems do not currently exist at a site, then the addition of a pool cannot introduce an adverse gravity or surcharge load. Line Load: An investigation of surcharge models considered a 2 klf line -load, applied 18" below finish grade, offset 5' from the pool wall. These models do not impose significant or adverse lateral surcharge loads on the pool wall or portions of the distending stemwall. Rock Benches: Axial load cases acting on the vertical stemwall of earth -retaining systems increase the magnitude of the resisting moment and are disregarded in the analysis. 8.0 Construction Tolerances Minor deviations to the specified geometric specifications for stemwall construction may be realized during construction without jeopardy. 9.0 Stemwalls Beyond the Limits of the Pool Shell Stemwalls or wing -walls extending beyond the limits of the pool/spa shell that retain earth for landscape features are not covered in this submittal. Any other retaining wall elements for landscape features or site development will be submitted under separate cover with a unique design and signatory for each site. 10.0 Slope Paving & Landscape features Excavations in granite or other igneous formations, shale, bluestone, sandstone, or horizontal bench -steps cuts in slopes equal to, or flatter than 1:1, are considered slope paving. Reinforcement for these elements are prescriptive designations. Specifications require mitigation to eliminate any potential hydrostatic forces. 11.0 Stormwater & Debri-Flow Builder plans shall incorporate appropriate mitigation to service any potential jeopardy of debri-flows from ascending slopes above construction improvements, and to capture and convey all stormwater prior to earth retaining structures or slope paving. The builder plan shall also include mitigation for the conveyance of surface drainage above stemwalls, or slope. paving elements and all project retaining walls or stemwalls. Under no circumstance shall slope -paving installations or earth -retaining structures be used to capture or convey stormwater run-off from landscape features or ascending slopes above the pool/spa. 12.1 Trenchwalls Trenchwalls are presented in the standard details for minor landscape features, fencing or may be capped for use as bench seating or other architectural elements. The flag -pole model considers level grade normal to the line of the trench wall (horizontal footing steps may be incorporated in either flat, ascending or descending slopes. Trenchwalls may be attached to the primary pool shell or may be detached landscape features. Trenchwalls must not be used to retain earth or water. www The Swimming Pool Engineer corn 2351 Sunset Boulevard. Suite 170:412. Rocklin. The grotto walls set about the lower shell may be set directly onto a benched grade (if ascending slope) or backfilled after fabrication. Lateral forces behind grotto walls are transferred in shear and axial compression to the grotto bond beam. The grotto, walls and lid are may be placed in phase construction: shell at waterline, grotto walls, then lid. The grotto walls and lid are considered pin connections about horizontal cold joints as may occur. 12.4 Trough, Slide & Other At -Grade Features All landscape trough or other features on slopes must be excavated with horizontal bench -steps. A bond - breaker is recommended at the juncture between structures and these topical landscape features. These elements are presented with prescriptive designations of reinforcement for minor loads at grade - features and to control shrinkage. A water trough or slide feature may be introduced directly adjacent to or monolithic with a grotto construction. www The Swimming Pool Engineer corn 2351 Sunsel Boulevard. Suite 170.412. Establishing an electrically safe environment in and around permanently installed swimming pools requires the creation of an equipotential grid. The sole purpose of an equipotential grid is to create an area where there is no significant difference in voltage between objects that can be touched simultaneously. Examples of objects that can be touched simultaneously include the concrete decking, ladders, handrails, light fixtures, drains, and the pool water. An equipotential grid is created by intentionally connecting all these objects together electrically, otherwise known as bonding them together. What parts of a swimming pool require bonding? Section 680.26 of the 2007 California Electrical Code (CEC) requires bonding of all the metal structures, parts and fittings that are within 5 feet horizontally of the pool wall, and 12 feet vertically above the maximum water level of the pool. The following parts require bonding: • Concrete reinforcing steel and all metallic structural components of the pool shell, coping stones and deck_ • Metal conduits, metal door frames and metal window frames within 5 feet of the inside pool wall. • Metal forming shells and mounting brackets of lighting fixtures. • Metal fittings and all metallic parts for handrails, ladders, metal drains and diving boards. • Metal casings of electrical equipment, all metal parts of any electrical equipment associated with the pool, including pumps and recirculating equipment, heaters, blowers and automatic covers. Equipotentfal Bonding Grid Bonding just the metal parts around the pool to each other may not provide a complete equipotential plane. For this reason, Section 680.26 (C) of the 2007 CEC requires connecting the metal parts to a common bonding grid that covers the entire contour of the pool. Additionally, the equipotential grid is required to extend horizontally under the deck for not less than 3 feet. The following pool shells are permitted to be used as an equipotential bonding grid by the 2007 CEC: • Structural reinforcing steel • A pool with bolted or welded walls • Field fabricated grid constructed with a minimum #8 AWG bare solid copper conductors for a concrete pool or deck with no reinforcing metal. In accordance with the exception in Section 680.26 (C), the equipotential bonding grid covering the entire contour of the pool is not required for vinyl lined, polymer wall, fiberglass composite or other pools constructed of non-conductive materials. klw:draft:28May08 ak ta 7} /- 2 - m±§iai& E u ak ro 1 e s 072-210-032 06-1248 ±PRESTELLA 96 VIEWCREST, OROVILLE Cont: BETTER BUILDERS NEW SINGLE FAMILY APN: Permit No. Owner.
