Eliza needs help, she is elderly and needs repair work a deck and handicap access to the mobile for her son in a wheelchair. The CDBG program was suggested to Supervisor Houx. Deborah called Eliza and offered to refer her to the CDBG program. Eliza agreed and Deborah contacted John Brousard at Connerly and Associates who agreed to facilitate the process for Eliza to apply for a grant or loan. Ms. Johnson came to our office seeking a permit for a roof on her mobile home. She was told that permits for mobile homes were handled by the State. She also mentioned something about a porch addition. She was told that this did require a permit from the county. There is a notice in her file that a proposed porch addition would require a county building permit. . In my conversation with Ms. Johnson I explained about the note in her file concerning the permit for the porch. I also told her that her file had not been flagged for followup. She told me now that she understood what had happened that she would like an inspector to come out and look at the porch so she could be told what was required for the permit. I told her I would arrange for an inspector to visit her and provide her with the information necessary to bring her residence into compliance with the Building Code. He found that a covered deck approximately 8' X 20' with a 4' X 20' ramp.and a covered deck approximately 3' X 6' had been constructed without the benefit of permits and inspections from this office. In a phone conversation you had previously with Brian Larsen of Development Services, you indicated you wanted to permit these structures and bring them into compliance with State and County regulations. To accomplish that, the following must be completed: 1. Prepare construction plans in triplicate for the cover, deck, and ramp. (I have included a copy of our typical deck construction detail for your use. It may be used for the deck and ramp construction) Plans for the cover, including rafter size and spacing, post and header size and spacing, anchorage and roof sheathing and covering need be detailed on the plans. t 2. Prepare a site plan and make 5 copies. The site plan should show and identify all buildings and there location on the parcel. 3. To.assist you, an application for permit is enclosed for your signature. Sign the application and attached forms where indicated and mail, or present at our permit counter, with permit fees and plans in triplicate. Repairing a Rotted Post If a post has rotted at the base, it's possible to replace just part of it without having to interfere with the structure above. Support the deck with a jack. before beginning this repair. Cut a lap joint - at least 18 inches long - in the existing post, above the damaged area. To make the crosscut, set a circular saw to exactly half the depth of the post. Then rip from 'both sides down, the center. Use a chisel to clean up the portion of the joint where the circular saw blade does riot reach. Install three staggered bolts through the posts to hold them- together. Tip from the pros: Precise layout and cutting will make the now joint strong and neat.
