Penetration The eccentricity of lapped members in nailed joints causes a secondary withdrawal stress on nails.or spikes. To prevent separation of the joint, adequate penetration of the shank of the nail or spike into the holding piece is necessary. For maximum holding power, a penetration of the pointed end of the shank equal to 14 times the shank diameter is required in softwood lumber. A minimum penetration of 8'/2 shank diameters is allowed and the holding power at this penetra- tion is 60 per cent of the maximum value. The value of the holding power is considered as pro- portionate between zero- at no penetration and a maximum at a penetration of 14 times the shank diameter. For practical carpentry, the optimum and minimum penetration retlutreinents of nails and spikes in wood -to -wood joints are measured of two-thirds and two-fifths of the nail length respectively. However, these general require- ments produce an inconsistency when two pieces of equal thickness are nailed together. This is because penetration requirements would rule out nails whose length would exceed the total thickness of the two pieces. Obviously, a larger nail, even if excessively long, should be permitted - as its greater diameter would make a stronger joint in all respects. This suggests that when pieces of equal thickness are nailed together and the nail wholly penetrates both pieces, but the' point does not protrude from the wood more than about 20 per cent of the length of the nail. the lateral holding strength of the nail.. should be calculated as follows: x PL, PL 2/31 in whirh P = the limite,l lateral lnaii in s.pqC&-r¢ members in a three member joint, the allowablle lateral load for nails or spikes can be increased one-third when each side member is not less than about one-third the thickness of the center member and. the -allowable lateral load may be increased two-thirds when each side member is equal in thickness to the center member. Nailed joints are considered to be more reliable when members are alternately nailed from each side. However, it is not `always practical or eco- nomical to nail this way. Withdrawal Strength Nails or spikes loaded indirect withdrawal. from side grain, are not .so_ efficient strengthwise as when loaded laterally. For this reason, it is pre- ferred to arrange nailed structural joints in a manner which loads the nail laterally rather than in withdrawal. Withdrawal resistance of nails or spikes is mate- rially affected by the specific gravity of wood. The formula for calculating withdrawal resistance for various species, at normal loading condition is: Pw = 1380 GS /2D in which P%v = allowable withdrawal resistance in pounds per linear inch of shank from the side grain of the holding piece, G = specific gravity of the species or species group, D = diameter of nail or spike in .. inches. There are numerous -uncertainties in joints with nails loaded in withdrawal, making this type of joint less preferred for most structural purposes. Such uncertainties also influence the choice of a large reduction factor of 6 in adjusting ultimate values to allowable values. !% , 4 n W ODDS USE BOOK 20 TIMBER FASTENERS TABLE 8.4 — (Continued) Group Species of Wood Specific Gravity (1) ' Uteral Load Constants K Nails"' Screws lag Screws Spiral "(z1 (21 131 Dowels (4) Balsam Fir - - 38 California Redwood (Open grain) ,37 Group I Coast Sitka Spruce .39 Cottonwood, Eastern -.41 d IV Eastern White Pine .38 1080 2520 1800 1220 Engelmann Spruce _ ,37 ..._. , Northern White Cedar.. .31 Subalpine Fir .34 Western Cedars - .36 Western White Pine .40 2 3 (1) Specific gravity based on oven -dry weight and volume.
