Subject: Nature Guard® Fiber Cement Roofing Shakes. II. Description: A. General: The Nature Guard Fiber Cement Roofing Shakes are cement -based panels comprised of Type III cement, wood fiberand aluminum hydrate. The finished products are 22 -inches long and vary in thickness from 11/16 inch at the butt end to 3/8 inch at the tip. The shakes have widths of 5, 7 and 12 inches. Accessory tiles such as starter pieces and hip and ridge units are provided. Dry weight of the shake is 5.8 pounds per square foot and saturated weight is 7.7 pounds per square foot when installed with a 10 -inch exposure. B. Installation: 1. General: The starter pieces measure 12 inches wide by 13 inches long and are fastened within 1 inch of the eave line. The first course extends over the eave 1 to 2 inches. The overhang on gables is 2 inches. Remaining courses are installed with a 10 -inch exposure to the weather with approximately 1/2 -inch side joint spacing between the pieces. The side joint spacing between adjacent courses is a minimum of 11/2 inches. 2. Sheathing: The products are installed on code -complying spaced or solid sheathing in accordance with the code. Solid sheathing is used for roof slopes less than 4:12. When installed over spaced or solid sheathing and underlayment, the shake roof is a Class A roof covering. 3. Underlaymeht: a. Under 3:12 Roof Slope: Nature Guard shakes may be installed only as a decorative cover over solid sheathing as set forth above. The sheathing must be covered with a complete built-up roof- ing system installed in accordance with Chapter 15 of the code and approved by the local building official. b. 3:12 to less than 4:12 Roof Slope: A single layer of Type 30, 36 -inch - wide underlayment is installed over solid sheathing. Type 30, 18 -inch - wide interlayment is used between courses. c. 4:12 to less than 12:12 Roof Slope: A single layer of Type 30, 18 -inch -wide interlayment is installed between courses in such a manner that no felt is exposed to weather. 4. Shake Fastening: Each shake is fastened with two minimum No. 13 gage (0.0915 -inch) corrosion -resistant nails having a minimum 0.22 -inch -diameter head. Nails must penetrate into the sheathing 3/4 inch or through its thickness, whichever is less. Nails are driven 1 inch from the edge and between 1/2 and 11/2 inches above the exposure line to ensure penetration into the tail piece beneath it. As an alternate, corro- sion -resistant minimum No. 15 gage (0.072 -inch), 7/16 -inch staples, with sufficient length for similar penetration as the nails, can be used when approved by the local building official. 5. Valley Flashing: Valleys are flashed with Type 30, 36 -inch -wide underlayment installed beneath minimum No. 26 gage (0.0179 -inch), Report No. 5121 Issued May 1, 1995 24 -inch -wide corrosion -resistant galvanized sheet metal flashing, in addi- tion to the underlayment required for general application of the products. Other conditions for wood shakes as noted in Section 1508.1 of the code apply. 6. Trim Shakes: Hip and ridge units are supplied preassembled as two 5 -inch by 22 -inch shakes with beveled edges and an alternating left/right configuration to deliver a straight hip and ridge line as well as a watertight application. Prior to installing the hip and ridge units, the field interlayment is installed so that it laps the peak of the hip or ridge a minimum of 4 inches each way resulting in a double layer of felt. A 6 -inch -wide felt strip is applied between the field pieces and the hip and ridge units. Fasteners must be long enough to penetrate the hip and ridge unit, field pieces and a minimum 414 inch into the sheathing. Fasteners must be driven between 1/2 and 11/2 inches above the exposure line to ensure penetration into the tail end of the unit below. Hip and ridge application requires a double course at the eave line and gable apex. The bottom unit on a hip application must be trimmed to lay flat on the first course. The top unit must then lay flat on the first and second courses. 7. Vent Flashing: Field pieces are cut to fit tightly around vent pipe. Vent flashing is then installed on top of the field pieces. A double layer of Type 30 felt is then lapped over the vent flashing. Field pieces may then be custom cut to cover felt and tie into existing Courses. 8. Reroofing: Where the existing roof is smooth and uniform as with composition or wood shingles, and the existing structure framing is suffi- cient to support the increased load, the shakes may be applied over the existing roofing as set forth in paragraph 11 B 3 and 4 of this report. Reroof- ing applications require prior approval by the local building official. When installed over existing roofing, the shake roof is nonrated. C. Identification: Products bear a label indicating manufacturer's name and address, product name and the name of the quality control agency, Professional Service Industries, Inc., Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory Divi- sion (NERQA-231). Each piece bears the mark 1P." III. Evidence Submitted: Data and reports of tests in accordance with the ICBO ES Acceptance Criteria for Special Roofing Systems dated Janu- ary, 1995 and quality control manual. Findings IV.
