This verification must be completed and returned to our office before we are permitted to issue the permit. May 1995 2.26 'O.B.=1 Dear Property Owner: An application for a building permit has been submitted in your name listing yourself as the builder of property improvements specified. For your protection, you should be aware that as "owner -builder" you are the responsible party of record on such a permit. Building permits are not required to be signed by property owners unless they are personally performing their own work. If your work is being performed by someone other than yourself, you may protect yourself from possible liability if that person applies for the proper permit in his or her name. Contractors are required -by law to be licensed and bonded by the State of California and to have a business license from the city or county. They are also required by law to put their license number on all permits for which they apply. If you plan to do your own work, with the exception of various trades that you plan to subcontract, you should be aware of the following information for your benefit and protection: 0 If you employ or otherwise engage any persons other than your immediate family, and the work (including materials and other costs) is $300 or more for the entire project, and such persons are not licensed as contractors or subcontractors, then you may be an employer. 0 If you are an employer, you must register with the State and Federal Governments as an employer and you are subject to several obligations including state and federal income tax withholding, federal social security taxes, workers compensation insurance, disability insurance costs, and unemployment compensation contributions. 0 There may be financial risks for you if you do not carry out these obligations, and these risks are especially serious with respect to worker's compensation insurance. 0 For more specific information about your obligations under Federal Law, contract the Internal Revenue Service (and, if you wish, the U.S. Small Business Administration). For more specific information about your _ obligations under State Law, contact the Department of Benefit Payments and the Division of Industrial Accidents. If the structure is intended for sale, property owners who are not licensed contractors are allowed to perform their work personally or through their own employees, without a licensed contractor or subcontractor, only under limited conditions. `A frequent practice of unlicensed persons professing to be contractors is to secure an `.ownerbuilder" building permit, erroneously implying that the property owner is providing his or her own labor and material personally. Building permits are not required to be signed by property owners unless they are performing their own .work personally. Information about licensed contractors may be obtained by contracting the Contractors State License Board in your community or at 1020 N Street, Sacramento, CA. 95814. Please complete the "Owner Builder Verification" on the reverse side of this form so that we can confirm that you are aware of these matters. The building permit will not be issued until the verification is returned. Sincerely, Michael C. Vieira, C.B.O. Manager, Building Inspection NOTE: This Owner -Builder Information is required by Section 19830 of the California Health and Safety Code. "I Industrial grade beams combine structural integrity with affordability and ease c application to satisfy your building needs. Al, 'h ' x Beauty and versatility make rc architectural beams glulam the most desirable choice. Industrial grade beams combine structural integrity with affordability and ease c application to satisfy your building needs. '63'q,'x,25V2 04X27 1,. 6Vb`k'28V2 Advantages of Glulam Thermal Expansion. Wood members change less in dimension with variations in temperature than do other materials. Usually, the effects of thermal expansion are negligible compared to dimensional changes (shrinkage or swelling) due to changes in moisture content and the two changes tend to offset each other. Longitudinal dimensional changes can be neglected for most structural designs. Unique Physical Properties. Wood's resilience permits it to absorb shocks that could rupture or break other materials. The fatigue limit of wood is above normal design stress levels, and wood resists fatigue due to repeated loading. Wood has excellent natural thermal and electrical insulating qualities. When properly used, glulam will last indefinitely. It can be finished in a wide variety of beautiful textures and colors. Renewable Resource. The U.S. has abundant forest resources. Trees are potentially the most plentiful industrial raw material in America. Lumber and plywood for housing and construction, and some 5,000 other products are manufactured from wood, the only naturally renewable building material resource. The U.S. still has nearly 75% as much forest land as when Columbus landed. Glulam permits better utilization of available supplies, because the laminating process makes use of several species and grades of lumber. Higher grades of lumber are placed in areas of highest stress and lower grades are used in areas of lower stress. This efficient utilization insures a continuous avail- able supply of glulam. Energy Conservation. Conversion of wood from the raw states to finished product consumes less fuel than the production of any comparable industrial building material. Comparisons reveal that the production of a ton of lumber requires about 453 kilowatt hours of electricity or its equivalent, while the production of a ton of steel take 3,780 kwh of electricity, and to produce a ton of aluminum requires 20,160 kwh. DUCO ►ILam, Ilmerican Laminatm 1. Section sizes are compared on the basis of bending resistance for normal duration of load and dry conditions of service. These sizes should be checked for shear, deflection and lateral stability considerations. A 2,000 psi design value in bending (reduced by size factor) was used for determin- ing equivalent glulam sizes except for those marked ' in which case a 2,400 psi design value (reduced by size factor) was used. 2. Selected sawn sections are based on the use of either a No. 1 grade or a Select Structural grade of Douglas fir - larch. Design values in bending used were 1,500 psi for No. 1 and 1,800 psi for Select Structural sizes 2 in. to 4 in. thick, 5 in. and wider; and 1,350 psi for No. 1 and 1,600 psi for Select Struc- tural beams and stringers. 3. Steel sections have been selected as _ the most economical from Dimensions and Properties, New W,HP and WT Shapes, Publication No. S325, by the American Institute of Steel Construc- tion, and are based on the minimum yield stress for A36 steel. Stock beams should be used for simple span applications only. Economy. Timber construction has historically been recognized as an economical type of construction: Laminated wood does not require the added expense of false ceilings to cover or disguise the structural framework. Glulam members can be used to provide long clear spans eliminating interiorwalls and supports. Ease of Installation. Because glulam members can be pre- fabricated at the plant to the job specifications, they arrive at the site ready for immediate installation. Most glulam members are installed by local labor forces with mobile construction equipment and hand tools. Chemical Resistance. Timber is often used where chemical deterioration eliminates use of other structural materials. Since wood substance is relatively inert chemically, under normal con- ditions it is not subject to chemical change or deterioration. It is resistant to most acids, rust and other corrosive agents. Durability. Wood structures, properly designed and constructed, have performed in service with satisfaction for centuries. When recognized principles of design and construction that protect wood from exposure to moisture, decay, fungi and insects are applied, wood is a durable construction material. When wood is not protected from this exposure, it should be pressure treated with chemical preservatives to increase durability. Safety. Heavy timber sizes used in glulam construction are difficult to ignite. Glulam burns slowly and resists heat penetration by the formation of self -insulating char. In a large member sub- jected to fire, the uncharred inner portion maintains its strength. Also, glulam does not expand or deform enough to push out supporting walls. Glulam, with its great capacity for absorbing impact loads and temporary overloads, provides safety under 1 high wind and earthquake conditions. P.O.
