At your, request on Wednesday, April 25, 1979 I conducted an archaeological reconnaissance of approximately 80 acres of hand located to the north of Avocado Road in the Aree, sur r.undi:ng rhe Blue lead, Mine,` n6ethweGt of Bangor. This area is to be rezoned from A-•5 to A-10 ` to allow ,a gold mining operation bit Zontel11 Miming. and is a portion of a 1284. acre area - AP#28 `20-37, 28-27-04 & 07. The area of the reconnaissance' lies In the N2; of the NW4 of Section 20,t T. 18 N. , RIO 5 E Bangor Quad., 7.5,; series. The area of the reconnaissance was along both sides of an G ntermittent drainage that passes through the abandoned area of the Blue Lead Mine. The terrain of the area is moderately steep and.. the.:. area. aVogeSheindcated byhas theepresencedafy. previous mining activities, mine. tailitrigs. Vegetation of the area consists of oak, pine, annual grasses and wild flowers and is fairly open. The abandoned site of the Blue bead Mine' lies in the center of the area and consists of concrete foundations of structures used during this mining operation. The dates of this mining operation are unknown but the use of r.oncrete for structures in this area .ndjcates that the operat'i an probably took place sometime after 1920. Na Signa"icasaL historical artifacts were found in the vicinity of the mxie that would aid in determining the dates of its operation. Prior to my reconnaissance of the area I con ulted the archaeological site record files maintained at California State Un versity, Chico to determine if any known archaeological sites were located within the project area. No sites had been previously recovded My reconnaissance of the area azound the Blue bead Milne was complete in that all areas were carefully examined. for materials of archaeological or histor'dal value The foundations located at the 'Blue Lead M:'_ne site were notrecorded as a historical site, but this may be done in the future if records of the that the: proposed miningrically significant.. mine opera pion indicate that t was hist° icallyiC,n avoid It is recommended res (416► a '"611 0' ' APPENDIX El Botanical Survey Letters ' and 'clap npril 24 15'79; J '.'
