The sail is 4 ;V i absoritiv e-of moisture and owing largely to , broken, schistgse character of the bedrock, has f1hicgh water -holding opacity and,, -+under cultivation retains moisture well. The Aiken; clay loam s mapped only in the rolling or hilly foothills in the eastern pert of the area. The surface ii smooth except for occasional rock outcrops. The soil is Well adapted to irrigation, though caro must be exercised to prevent erosion. The use of large quantities of irrigation water sometimes results in local)ponded areas caused by roof -dikes formed by upturned strata of schist. surface drainage is good, )tut tye irregular surface of the bedrock in which shallow rock basins are Aelop d interfere somewhat with subdrainage Negative vegetation consists of oak, pino, and varying quantities of underbrush. The cultivated areas are largely under, irrigation and a b de ;irited to the production of olives, oranges, figs, and a number of othn ,fruits and general farm crops. Most of the orchards occupy the slope.:i having good air and soil drainage, and the flat areas are planted for (,-0ain and alfalfa. The Aifen clay loam is an inherently fertile soil and by carefully o0serving cultural practices may be kept productive for mal,y ,:yoars i•( OunMI O GRAVELLY`SANDY LOAM." This soil type occurs'betWeen the flat lands of Orovi l l e proper, and "the Foothills wherein the Aiken clay loam predominates, This 1 i kuwi se occurs over one-sixth of the area of the Orovil l e Ol ann•i ng district, The soil has a low organic maftor content and where not cultivated has a tendency to run together thea et and to` baize on drying, It absorbs' water readily when once' moist ,and ny-ta i ns it wol 1 under cultivation. This , soil is derived by weathering froii, old, unco"sol°i dated alluvial afan do °poli ti of mixed" origin, which have been brought to SO present position bye Lhe present or former streams, issuing from the adjacent cowltAin, The most ttypical and most ekpensit reks of corning g avelly 'sAidy loam are in the low rolling hills that occu s l i htly" higher elevations Ehen soils of the Redding series. The surface of this sail is slightly undidatinrg, rolling or hilly, but is generally smooth and gently entl soil rate slopina,to' , rface well cstabli., ed and matt o ' Surface drainage is ,igatian, ytt on some of the statoer hill sl slopes care mint be oxerci, sed to provent ehosion. Corning gtavell sandylym is used i incipa.11y for grazing prlposes. The coining gravelly sandy' loam is permeahA to plant roots and water to';a depth greater than six feet, Most of it, Wo it,,tr,' is considered of low agtri cul turali Yal ue. REDDING GRAVELLY SANDY LOAM, This sail type occurs on the lower slopes, adjacent to the 0huvi11e urban area, and constitutes almost Q1 third of the 0ilanning area,` This soil is mapped almost exclusively on the east side of the district, It occupies the rolling or undulating old alluvial land remnants bordering the Poothills. Areas of this soil are undulating, rollinn, or hilly, The surfacei,of virgin areas has a hog -wallow appearance caused by the preronce of smalil, shallow more -or -less rounuod depressions or basins - with intev niol mi rinds. Chunty and the Oroville area between 1960 and 1970. For example, the black populallIon in the county increased 421,'0' compared to 32 ' for Oroville. Al though the, !Mack population in these two jurisdictions did not grow at the same ra,i.P $' Orovi 1 l e now has over 1,123 Mack compared to 1,595 for the entire county, The black population is the principal minority race in Oroville and it is predominately concentrated in the South Oroville Area, This high concentration should alert the community to special problems created in housing, jobs, and proVerty normally associated with the 'concentration of cortain ethnic groups in a particular area.
