In District 833, undersized culverts must be replaced on each
lateral to provide pas -sage of existing; runoff as well as that
which will occur with new development.. On the E-7 lateral,
the reinforced box structure crossing State Highway 99, is under-
sized for the ultimate needs, and most important: are the down-
stream needs of the E-1 channel, The channel that' drains the,
majority of the City;
The Master Drainage Study identifies these needs as top
priority and initial developments ,must bear..the brunt of the
initi,r;1 wol�k.
Gridley basically outfalls the majbrity,of I.t's runoff into
the Butte Sink, a vast overflow channe1 that accepts the
overflow of the Sacramento River., be�girning,�at the Chico
i,and:ing, with yloints of overflow occurring at the Moluton and
Colusa Weirs. , Butte Creek is the main outfall channel of
a Large drainage basin that extends back into the little
,;Cottonwood Creek cl'�.4:r ,above Orovi•lle. 'The ,Cherokee canal
is a 'major drainag( Gt,t(,,vy' within Che Butte Sink and merges
with Butte Creek just tvdst of the Tule Cun. Club.
The west levee bord6rift,6 the Cherokee channel is approximately
10 feet above the natural ground slope adjacent to the canal,
and terminates at the junction with the main drainage lateral
of Reclamation District 833 approx m holy two miles south of
the Gridley-Colusa Highway'.
During, February 1980, overflow of ,the 'Col'usa and Moluton
heirs coupled with the runoff of the Butte Creek drainage
basin and it's tributaries produced a water elevation in the
_.Butte Sink of 63.75 feed::, at the Colusa=`Gridley 4
Highway
bridge crossing the ("��x�a3��: canal, 'Testimony from Recla-
mation Districts 833 �.acials have indicated that the 1969
storms, and overflows, nto the Butte Sank, produced an elevation
of Coater of approxiia;t.ely 68 fee''.•
Gridley outfalls into Reclamation District 333 at 3 locations,
the E -1A drains southwest Gridley, t -7A drains the high school -
fairgrounds area, and E-1 drains the central and northern
areas of the City. The three' major sublaterals of the Recla-
mation District 833's main S -lateral„ wdul.d receive approximate-
ly 668cfs of City storm runoff, a�� o:,timum land use density.
520 cfs is received by the E-1 channel,
The critical outfall elevation of Gridl.ey's underground drainage'
systems is at the West Bi rgs-Gridley Road. The elevation of,.,
the water surface is approxi;ttately 86.0 feet.
The difference in elevation between the 'high water elevation at
Gridley-Colusa Highway crossing of the Cherokee canal '(63 feet)
and outfall into the E-1 channel. from Gridley (86 feet) is 20
feet. It would appear that the Butte Sink must rise considerably
before back water would occur in Gridley. The quantity of runoff
