The accompanying map shotes no improvement to be made at location #2 of the ,'Jest Basin. Table 4 on page 45 indicates that the two 24-34-nch RCP's to be are replaced with four 58 - inch x 36 -inch .A.CMP's. The existing installation at location #2 is a double 8,foot x -foot RCP. It appears that location #2 1 the n report should be location #3 as shown on the map , which does indicatea proposed improvement. Table 4 on page 42 indicates that structure #3 is to be retained. Indications are that as the upstream area nears full development, this structure will also have to be upgraded. LEU J. TROMBAT011E District Direct6,x of Transportation R. Review Department 18-F County Center Drive Oroville, CA 95965 Dear Mr. Nelson, At your request on March 10, 11 & 13, 1979 1 conducted an archaeological reconnaissance of the areas covered by threo proposed drainage system projects within Butte County. They are as follows: East Chico Drainage Study - the area is locatedadjacent to and to the east of Chaco Canyon Road, bordered on the west by Forest Ave., on the south by Highway 32 and a Humbolt Road, and on the east by an extens,on or fChico tion oCanyon Road, This area is between the east .bank of Big Chico 'Creek and the north bank of little Chico Creek. The terrain ranges from very flat in the western portion to a gentle slope in the eastern portion► At present this area is being developed for residential. u se, -which is replacing the scattered small ranches an the area. Natural vegetation of the area consists Oscattered oaks and annual grasses. The area lies within the SEI of Section 18, mast of Section 1.9, and the NWJ of the 30 NV1 of Section , T. 22 No, R. 2 E., Chico and 'Richardson Springs Quads., 7.5' series. Northwest Chico Storni' Drain Master Plan - located within the City of Chico,, south of hindo Channels between the Southern PElcifio. Railroad and 'the Esplanade, extending north from West 6th Ave,. The terrain of the area is very flat and the na. ti are ral vegetation of the area is highly disturbed. This a is a well developed residential area in the eastern half and contains a number of orchards in the western half. The :area. is part of the Rancho de Arroyo dhicu located in T. 21 N.j R. 1 E. Chico'4uad., 7.5+ series. V"'Thermalito Master Drainage Plan - located to the West Feather giver immediately to the west of'Oroville, sou h of Tu ato Forebay. The area is bordered on the east by 20thS't eet and on the south by Oroville D an area of 2 80 acres of band. The am Blvd. and covers proposed project is designed to correct existing flooding and to prevent future' flnding as additional development occurs. The area is at presen` being developed as a residential, area but large arc4xs of open grassland still, exist. Prior to my reconnaissance of " t e propete rties described, boveat I consulted the archaeological California State 'University, Chico to determine if any known archaeological sites were iodated within these areas. No sly recorded., however_, all of the areas sites had been previou had sites recorded z 1 the immediate vicinity. My reconnaissELice of these areas was not complete due to the large size of the are -Is involved. My reconnaissance focuaed on the areas that will be directly impacted by the proposed projects, which involv0d walking over the paths of the proposed drainage syste'+"pis as indicated on the maps provided. The proposedroutes, of the drainage systems were carefully examined for' ma't arlals (;f archaeological or historical value. No archaeol0g-ical, 01', historical sites were observed during my inspectiMis of -,, y of the areas described above and it is recommended tra:`l archaeological clearance be given to all three of these pr.'ojects. I would like to add a note of caution concerning subsurface excavation in theEast Chico and Northwest Chico areas. Road construction and lands -aping activities tri these areas h'as obscuf the natural surface, inhibiting ide tions ontifi red por- obscured of any archaeological sites that may be present. Although it is unlikely that there are such sites it these areas, workers on these , projects should be made aware of the poss1 ), , :L of their existance If archaeological material or.human remains are °encountered a qualified archaeologist should be contacted immediately to determine the significance of the materiali r`-,Si.ncere y u'rs .1, amts P.
