3.0 Grounding Overview -
Warning! Ensure that you fully understand the grounding aspects in this section before proceeding.
This section is.intended to provide a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of grounding for SunPower
96 -Cell AC Modules when they are installed with the SunPower® InvisiMounVm Residential Mounting System;
it contains excerpts from the SunPower 96-Cell'AC Module Design and Installation Guide (#515791;
unreleased); and.the SunPower AC Module Safety and Installation Instructions (#51744); as well as
references to the applicable NEC Articles and UL Standards.
The InvisiMount system is Listed to UL 2703 for integrated grounding; SunPower AC Modules are a bonding
component and are Listed to UL 1741. If you are installing SunPower AC Modules on the InvisiMount
system, no additional grounding hardware, lugs, or copper wire are required on the roof.

If you are, installing SunPower AC Modules on the SunPower InvisiMountTA° mounting system (or any
mounting system that is Listed to UL 2703 for bonding—not just for fire classification), no additional
grounding wire is required:
The SunPower AC Module is one of the components that bonds all of the metallic non-current carrying
components in the system, and is Listed to UL 1741.
• As part of UL 2703, only AC equipment grounding requirements apply -not DC system grounding
requirements nor DC equipment grounding requirements.
The equipment grounding conductor (EGC) that's built into the module's AC cable system is sized
appropriately and meets all of the AC equipment grounding requirements for the•system.
• The AC dedicated branch circuit wiring from the readily accessible disconnect to the array must include
an equipment grounding conductor (EGC) in the same raceway or cable as the AC circuit conductors. This
EGC must be connected to the green conductor of the transition cable, which is part of the AC module
cable system.
If, a module is removed from a circuit, you must install a temporary EGC to bridge the gap by inserting an
AC extension cable or other means, in order to maintain effective ground continuity to subsequent
modules.
• Because the modules are connected in a "daisy chain" fashion, disconnecting one module from the circuit
using the AC cable removes voltage and ground from the other downstream modules in the circuit.
Extreme care should be taken to ensure that no other energized sources are adjacent to these
ungrounded modules, otherwise auxiliary grounding methods must be applied.
io Because the DC power is internal to the module, a grounding electrode conductor (GEC) for the module
or array is not required. The existing AC GEC at the utility service serves as the NEC -required GEC for the
structure.
• The AC cable grounding path has been tested by a NRTL, and its electrical continuity from the AC cable
ground pin to the module frame has been certified.
• The AC moduleinterconnecting cable system provides an internal EGC for grounding the AC modules. It
is the installer's responsibility to ground any metallic mounting structure according to local code:
Installers must ensure that whichever mounting system they choose is then grounded according to the
instructions of that mounting system. Some mounting systems can be.bonded to the AC modules with
listed devices. Consult the module's included safety instructions for details.
• Neither the AC modules nor the array require a GEC, and the neutral conductor within the AC module is
isolated from ground. The AC module must be connected to a dedicated AC branch circuit with the
neutral conductor referenced at the building service entrance.
• The AC interconnecting cable system attached to each module's microinverter is fully insulated and
includes an internal EGC.-The grounding pin is longer than the others in the plug.

Source" by means of permanently affixed labels or other approved permanent marking:
1. Exposed raceway, cable trays and other wiring methods .
2. Covers or enclosures of pull boxes and junction boxes
3. Conduit bodies in which any of the available conduit openings are unused
The labels or markings shall be visible after installation. Photovoltaic power circuit labels
shall appear on every section of the wiring system that is separated by enclosures, walls,

Declaration of Installation
for Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
The newly adopted 2013 California Residential Code requires the installation of Carbon
Monoxide Detectors in dwelling units and in sleeping units within which fuel -burning appliances
are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages. The policy for Carbon Monoxide
Alarms in Butte County states: "Any permit obtained in which the value of work exceeds $1000
associated with a Residential Group R Dwelling Unit or Sleeping Unit shall conform to the
following 2013 California Residential Code requirements for Smoke and Carbon Monoxide
Alarms (Section R314 & R315)."
2013 California Residential Code requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms:
R315.1 New construction: An approved carbon monoxide alarm shall be installed in dwelling
units and in sleeping units within which fuel -burning appliances are installed and in dwelling
units that have attached garages.
R315.1.2 Power supply: For new construction required carbon monoxide alarms shall receive
their primary power from the building wiring where such wiring is served from a commercial
source and shall be equipped with a battery back-up. Alarm wiring shall be directly connected to
the permanent building wiring without a disconnecting switch other than as required for over -
current protection.
Exceptions:
1. In dwelling units where there is no commercial power supply the carbon monoxide alarm may be solely
battery operated.
2. In existing dwelling units a carbon monoxide alarm is permitted to be solely battery operated where
repairs or alterations do not result in the removal of wall and ceiling finishes
or there is no access by means of attic, basement or crawl space.
R315.1.3 Interconnection. Where more than one carbon monoxide alarm is required to be
installed within the dwelling unit or within a sleeping unit the alarm shall be interconnected in a
manner that activation of one alarm shall activate all of the alarms in the individual unit.
a
Exception: . .
1. Interconnection is not required in existing dwelling units where repairs do not result in the
removal of wall and ceiling finishes, there is no access by means of attic, basement or crawl
space, and no previous method for interconnection existed.
R315.2 Where required in existing dwellings: Where a permit is required for alterations,
repairs or additions exceeding one thousand dollars,($ 1;000), existing dwellings or sleeping
units that have attached garages or fuel -burning appliances shall be provided with a carbon
monoxide alarm in accordance with Section R315.1. Carbon monoxide alarms shall only be
required in the specific dwelling unit or sleeping unit for which the permit was obtained.
R315.2.6 Alarm"requirements: No person shall install, market, distribute, offer for sale or sell
any carbon monoxide device in the State of California unless the device and instructions have
been approved and listed by the State Fire Marshal.
Pagel of 2
Revised 7.20.2015
Carbon monoxide alarms required by Sections R315.1 and R315.2 shall be installed in the
following locations:
1. Outside of each separate dwelling unit sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the
bedroom(s).
2. On every level of a dwelling unit including basements.
R315.1.5 Multiple -purpose alarms: Carbon monoxide alarms combined with smoke alarms
shall comply with Section R315, all applicable standards, and requirements for listing and
approval by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, for smoke alarms.
Butte County's Interpretation of 2013 CRC, Sections 314 &-315 for
Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Alarms:
Where alterations, repairs or additions exceeding $1,000 in valuation, existing dwellings shall be
retrofitted with smoke alarms and those that have attached arages or fuel -burning appliances shall have
carbon monoxide alarms installed. Existing smoke alarms can be replaced with dual function alarms for
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide and in most cases will comply with the aforementioned code requirements
for Carbon Monoxide Alarms.
