June 17, 1981 Mr. Earl Nelson, Director Environmental Review Department ).County Center Drive Oroville , :.CA .:95965 Dear Mr. Nelson, At.your`request on Tuesday, June 16, 1981 I conducted an archaeological reconnaissance of two properties located within Butte County. They are as follows: Ronald .R�Io�an AP#41-08-27/ERD Log.:#81=05-22=04 approximately 18 acres of land located at :the ,north -end ,..of Dry -Creek -Road, approximately 2' miles north -of ..'.the .intefisecaion -w.ith Messilla Valley Road,.south.of Paradise. The property covers a. portion of the S of'the SJ of Sec -:ion 1, T. 21 N., R.`3 E., Cherokee Quadrangle, 7.5' series and the proposed project is for a mining operation. .-The .property lies along .both sides of t_ ry Creek at the bottom of a steep, narrow.. canyon. Vegetation of the -property consists'of oak -grassland,with. some chaparral and. riparian :vegetation.. One residence ..is currently located on the property: _.. Durkin and Drew - AP#43-29-15/ERD Log #81-05-22-01 approximately 10.3 acres of land located adjacent to -the north side of Bidwell Avenue, approximately 250 feet west of the intersection with Pose Avenue, west of Chico. The property. is :a portion of. the Rancho de Farwell, T;. 22 V., R.:1 E. Chico. Quadrangle, 7.5. series and the proposed projected is for'the McDowell Subdivision, a 27 unit residential development. The property is relatively level And currently. is cultivated as a .walnut orchard. Prior to conducting -a reconnaissance of these properties I consulted the archaeological site record filas maintained at' California State University, Chico to determine if any previously recorded archaeological.sites.were located within or adjacent to either of these property areas. - No such sites had been recorded within or .ad.'I. a t:;t.O: either: -of these property Areas. My reconnaissance of both property areas was .complete in that both areas were examined for materials• or features indicative of early historic or prehistoric activities by walking.over the entire surface area of the properties by following linear transects with an approximate 15 meter interval. The Logan property covers part of the area that had been covered by the New. Era m;.ping operation. No materials from this operation were i_denti-f.ied, within the. property area, but a number of small mine shafts and mine tailings we;ne evidenced on the property.
