in the construction of the foundation.for the Thaw area cover, for Smucker's•at.37 SpeedwayAve, the
excavation for'the footing at'gridline A-4 encountered uncompacted fill to:a depth of approximately.4'
below the proposed Base level of the new structure.
On section WS11 in the approved plans it is noted that footings must extend`at least 18 into native material
meaning the bottom of the footing would need to be more than 5' below grade while the actual design'
thickness of the footing only needs to be, V-,.4" thick as shown'in section:H/Sl: -Rather than make the-footing
entirely of concrete, the excavation may be backfilled with either clean gravel or compacted Class 11
aggregate base up to a level where the actual concrete footing is only 2'-4" thick.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Arrived at the jobsite at 0700 hours to perform special inspection of high strength bolting at the thaw building. .
Before tightening the bolts we verified that the materials used in this assembly were in conformance with the
requirements of section 2 (Bolts, Nuts, Washers and Paint) and section 3 (Bolted Parts) of the RCSC Specifications.
The bolts used in this structure were %" A325 grade high strength bolts with hardened steel washers beneath
hardened steel nuts.
[XJ Torque Wrench W/ Washers -- The Calibrated Wrench. Tightening method was used per Section 9.2.2 of the
RCSC Specifications. A representative sample of 3 bolts from each diameter, length, and grade used in this structure
were tightened in the Skidmore Wilhelm tension -indicating device using a calibrated dial -indicator torque wrench.
Three readings were recorded, on the wrench, for each bolt size, in order to establish an average job test torque to
provide a tension not less than five percent in excess of the minimum tension specified in Table 8.1 of the RCSC
Specifications.
Each bolt assembly was installed and tightened to a snug -tight condition by the contractor prior to tightening. There
were a total of 24 bolts in the structure, all were tightened using the above mentioned procedure.
Based on the above mentioned procedure, it is our judgment that all A325 high strength bolts installed in the
structure have been properly tensioned in accordance with the RCSC Specifications for Structural Joints contained in
the AISC Manual for Steel Construction.
