DESCRIPTION OF WORK, I
i
Arrived at the jobsite at 0530 hours to perform special inspection of high strength bolting at the Rich Kelly Shop.
Before tightening the bolts we verified that the materials used in this'asserribly were in conformance with the requirements
of section 2111olts, Nuts, Washers and Paint) and section 3 (Bolted Parts) of the RCSC Specifications. The bolts used in this
structure were A325 grade high strength bolts without hardened steel washers beneath hardened steel nuts.
JX} Turn of the Nut - No washers were used in this assembly, so the Tum -of -Nut Tightening method was used per Section
9.2.1 A representative sample of 3 bolts from each diameter; length, and grade used in this structure were tightened in the
Skidmore Wilhelm tension -indicating device. This was done to verify the estimated snug tight condition and to ensure that
the controlling turns past snug -tight per Table 7.1 will develop a tension not less than five, percent greater than the tension
required by Table 8.1 of the RSCS specifications. Wealso yelled that there was no rotation of any of the bolts during the
tightening operation.
Each bolt assembly was installed and tightened to a snug-tighi condition by the contractor prior to tightening. There were a
total of 72 bolts in the structure, all were tightened using the above mentioned procedure.
Based on the above mentioned procedure, it our judgment that all A325 high;sfreigtFi tioftJrisWled in the structure
have been property tensioned in accordance with the RCSC Specifications for Stnictura Joints=.contained in the RISC Manual
for Steel Construction.
