Reference and Tips
Additional tips and information for installing mounts:
See Classic Composition Mountinstall and Quick Tips videos on nail removal, boltprep, and moreat:
www.quickmountpv.com/support/videos.html
It is not necessary or advisable to use nails or other fasteners to secure the perimeter of
the flashing.
The Classic Composition Mount is made to work with standard and high-definition composition/
asphalt and wood shingle roofs with 5" to 5-5/8" courses. If the exposed surface of the course
exceeds this measurement you may need to use our Classic Shake Mount instead.
Depending on the season and climate, size and location of seal tabs, and quality of the shingles,
the seal tabs that adhere the shingle courses together may not effectively seal the shingles to the
flashings. If this is the case, simply add several quarter -sized dabs of manufacturer accepted sealant
or asphalt roofing cement, meeting ASTM D 4586 Type 11, between the flashing and the shingle
above.
• Mounts should not be installed in areas of the roof susceptible to ice damming. Water poncling
under the shingles can reach the bolt penetration.
• Take care not to damage the roofing material while working on the roof. Removing stone granules
and deforming the shingles in any way can shorten the lifespan of the roofing. The value of the solar
array is directly affected by the condition of the roof it is attached to.

California State Fire Marshal
Information Bulletin 14-011
Issued: November 25, 2014
FIRE CLASSIFICATION FOR ROOF MOUNTED SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS
AND/OR PANEL MODULES — 2013 CALIFORNIA BUILDING STANDARDS CODE
SUPPLEMENT EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2015
The Office of the State Fire Marshal is issuing this Information Bulletin to address the
use of photovoltaic solar systems and/or panel modules in areas outside the State
Responsibility Areas (SRA) and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. The adoption of
UL 1703 with revisions through October 25, 2013 and the Emergency Rulemaking that
delayed the effective date to January 1, 2015 of the adoption were intended to focus on
the areas that require Class A or Class B roofing (SRA and Very High Fire Hazard
Severity Zones). Where Class A or Class B roofing is required, the photovoltaic solar
system (photovoltaic panels with the rack support system) shall have a Class A or Class
B rating, respectively.
Areas in California that only require a minimum Class C roofing due to statutory
provision contained in Health and Safety Code 13132.7 should not be impacted by the
early adoption of UL 1703. Those buildings and structures requiring Class C roofing
should be able to have installed one of the following and meet the intent of the 2013.
California Building Standards Code:
1. Photovoltaic panels and modules having a Class C rating under the previous version
of UL 1703 (2002 edition with revisions through April 2008), or
2. Photovoltaic panels and modules having a Class C rating complying with UL 790
(2004 edition with revisions through October 2008), or
3. Photovoltaic systems having a minimum Class C rating under the most recent
version of UL 1703 (2002 edition with revisions through October 2013).
Fire classification of photovoltaic solar systems and panels shall be marked with their
fire classification rating, Class A, B, or C.
Questions or comments regarding this Information Bulletin should be directed to
Division.Chief Kevin Reinertson, Code Development and Analysis at (916) 327-4998, or
by electronic mail to kevin.reinertson@fire.ca.gov.

Declaration of Installation
for Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
The newly adopted 2013 California Residential Code requires the installation of Carbon
Monoxide Detectors in dwelling units and in sleeping units within which fuel-buming appliances
are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages. The. policy for Carbon Monoxide
Alarms in Butte County states: "Any permit obtained in Which the value of work exceeds $1000
associated with a Residential -Group R Dwelling Unit or Sleeping Unit shall conform to the
following 2013 California Residential Code requirements for Smoke and Carbon Monoxide
Alarms (Section R314A R315)."
2013 California Residential Code requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms:
R315.1'New. construction: An approved carbon. monoxide alarm shall be installed in dwelling
units and in sleeping, units within which tuel-burning appliances are installed and in dwelling
units -that have attached gairages.
R315.1.2 Power supply: For new construction requiredicarbon monoxide alarms shall receive
their primary power from the building wiring where such wiring is served from a commercial
source and shall be equipped with a battery back-up. Alarm wiring shall be directly connected to
the permanent building wiring without a disconnecting switch other than as required for over-.
current protection.
EXrepawn:
.1. In dwelling units where there is no commercial power supply the carbon monoxide alarm may be solely
'battery operated. I '
t
2., In existing dwelling units a carbon monoxide alarn! is permitted to be solely battery opera ed where
repairs or alterations do not result in the removal of wall and ceiling finishes
or there is no access by means of attic, basement or crawl space.
1113115.1.3 Interconnection. Where, more than one crbon monoxiae alarm is required to be
i nstalled within the dwelling unit or within a sleeping unit the, alarm shall be interconnected in a
manner that activation of one alarm shall activate all of the alarms in the individual unit.
Exception:
1. Interconnection is not required in existing dwelling units where repairs do not result in the
awl
removal of wall and ceiling finishes, there is no access by means of affic, basement or cr.
space, and no brevious method for interconnection existed.
R315.2 W . here required in existing dwellings:, Where a permit is required for alterations,
