With regard to those items listed in your letter dated January 5, 2010 and points made during your November 16 inspection, the following actions were taken. 1. Activation switches were added to operate previously installed high intensity emergency lighting with high volume horn located in the auditorium and dining hall to work in conjunction with our previously installed switch in the hallway. This installation was done by a licensed electrical contractor. Alarms and switches were tested in the presence of Deputy Fire Marshall Matt Damon. 2. Panic and fire exit hardware for the main entrance and north exit door were purchased and are scheduled for installation on January 13. Mr. Damon was shown the receipt for the purchased hardware during his visit to the building on January 11. 3. Hardware for the intervening doors leading to the foyer was ordered on January 11 and should be available for installation at week's end. Existing latches and door knobs will be removed and automatic closers and pull handles installed. 4. An area of 3 square feet to be kept clear in front of all electrical panels was marked with red tape and a sign posted. An old non -working electrical panel adjacent to the stage with exposed 'dead' wiring was covered and secured. 5. A sign above the front and dining hall entrances stating that 'the doors must remain unlocked during hours of operation' was posted. 6. We consulted with a building contractor for a preliminary design and cost estimate for a new exit door in the auditorium. As was discussed with Mr. Damon on January 11, we are currently in the process of renovating our bathrooms to make them ADA compliant and thereby safer for the public use. Although the bathroom project is very costly and is a strain on our budget, we understand that the new exit is a necessary undertaking. We are presently working on our 2010 budget and making a concerted effort to commit the needed funds to this important project. Once a favorable budget is completed and approved from Grange membership, we will strive to make measurable progress on the new exit by year's end. Other fire safety actions in progress based our discussion with Mr. Damon include: posting "warming only kitchen" signs, replacing our current ABC kitchen fire extinguisher with a type K, adding no open flame clause to our rental agreement, and adding an additional fire extinguisher on the auditorium stage. We routinely keep our dumpster a safe distance away from the building and remove any dry bush that may present a fire danger. We appreciate your suggestions and guidance to ensure that the Chico Grange is as fire safe as possible. Thank you. At that time several items requiring correction were noted. You were advised that a list of those items would be provided to you and that after discussion with your governing body; mutually agreeable timelines would be established for rectifying those conditions. Conditions needing correction: • Add emergency lighting in kitchen, increase emergency lighting in ballroom and dining hall. (2007 CFC 1006.3) • Add horn / strobe devices in ballroom and kitchen (2007 CFC 907.2.1) • Install panic and fire exit hardware in the following locations. (2007 CFC 1008.1.9) o Both sides of the main entrance door o North exit door in the dining hall o Intervening doors leading from the foyer to the ballroom and dining hall ■ These doors may have the latches removed and install automatic closers and pull handles on foyer side in lieu of panic and fire exit hardware. • Add exit door and ramp to ballroom. o Door and ramp must meet all state and local fire and building requirements.
