HomeMy WebLinkAbout00-022RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 13 THE SAFE DRINKING WATER, CLEAN WATER, WATERSHED PROTECTION AND FLOOD PROTECTION ACT WHEREAS, the County of Butte and many Northern California counties have experienced significant flood damage in the past and are now prone to flood conditions that can have devastating economic and social consequences for residents and property within the County; and WHEREAS, Butte County encoeirages assistance from both the federal and state government to help protect its citizens and property from future flood events; and WHEREAS. Proposition 13 will invest $90 million in essential Northern California flood control programs, such as enlarging existing reservoirs and other system-wide improvements, to protect lives and avert billions of dollars in property damages and present massive disruptions in clean water supplies for our families and businesses; and WHEREAS, Proposition 1 i will enable our state to be eligible for more: than $200 million additional federal dollars for flood protection and $600 million for clean water and water supply programs, and WHEREAS, Proposition 13 will make our drinking water safer by fighting groundwater contamination, repairing eroded water pipes and sewer systems, eliminating pollution sources and protecting storage and distribution systems that provide safe drinking water for our citizenry; and WHEREAS, Proposition 13 will provide essential funds for important clean water, watershed protection and conservation projects for the improvement of our state's water infrastructure; and WHEREAS, the Governor, as part of the bond discussions, has committed $20 million in his 2000-2001 budget to study surface water storage in California; WHEREAS, Proposition 13 is a sound investment for our state's economy and environment. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLV'F,D by the Board of Supervisors: that ~e join in the broad coalition of business, labor, local government, environmental, taxpayer and agricultural groups in support of Proposition 1 i, the Safe Drinking V4'ater, Clean Water, Watershed Protection and Flood Protection Act and that we strongly recommend that the voters of California support and pass Proposition i3 on the March 7, ?000 ballot.
