HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-016RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY ELDER FINANCIAL ABUSE AWARENESS WEEK IN BUTTE COUNTY WHEREAS, the tragedy of eider abuse affects every community, city, and county in California, and touches lives regardless of cultural, ethnic, religious, or socioeconomic status; and WHEREAS, the number of elder and dependent adult abuse victims and reports of abuse continue to rise,. having nearly doubled in Butte County from 1998/99 to 1999/00; and WHEREAS, the tragedy of elder financial abuse has been called, `'The Crime of the New Decade", because only 1 in 14 victims make reports or ask for intervention resulting in loss of homes, estates and life savings; and WHEREAS, the collaboration among the Butte County District Attorney's Office, Butte County Adult Protective Services, the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program and Legal Services of Northern California in presenting a North State Conference on "Elder and Dependent Adult Financial Abuse -Prosecution-2001" on May 1~` to law enforcement, public and private social and health service agencies, financial institutions, professionals, volunteers, local leaders and policy-makers is to be commended; and WHEREAS, the observation of Elder Financial Abuse Awareness V~'eek provides an excellent opporttimity for all citizens to become active in prevention activities and educated and informed about all aspects of elder abuse and neglect and how to report all forms of suspected abuse. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim THE FIRST VdEEK OF MAY TO BE ELDER FINANCIAL, ABUSE AWARENESS WEEIf IN BUTTE COUNTY; AND, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors urges all citizens, public and private agencies, financial institutions and public officials in this County to work together toward the reduction of elder financial abuse by increasing education, information, and vigilance in all matters pertaining to reporting, investigating, resolving and prosecuting cases of elder financial abuse.
