RF,SOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RURAL, TELECOMMUNICATIONS
FOR NORTHF,RN CALIFORNIA
WHEREAS, there exists within the County of Butte, the issue of t~tnreliable, if not non-
existent rural telecommunications; and
WHEREAS, there exists federal legislation in the form of the Telecommunications Act of
1998 which promises telecommunications to the rural areas of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the California Public Utilities Commission states, "everyone in the State of
California is entitled to basic telephone service;"' and
WHERE AS. a telephone is an item that is considered to be a necessity in today's world; and
WHERF,AS, there are documented health and safety issues, economic impact issues,
educational issues, and lost employment issues that must be addressed in order- for the County of
Butte to conduct its business in a reasonable representation of its residents and visitors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County of Butte does, by and through
its agents and representatives, strongly endorse the formation of a Telecommunications Coalition,
and that the County of Butte will assist in facilitating the efforts and needs of the
Telecommunications Coalition.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 9`~' day of
October ?001 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Yamaguchi and Chair Josiassen
