HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-116HEALTHY AGING DAYS Butte County WHEREAS, California is home to the largest senior citizen population in the United States; 10.6°I° of the population of California is 65 and older, in Butte County 22.53°I° of the population is 60 and older; and WHEREAS, the fastest growing population group in California is 85 and older. In Butte County 5.41 °I° of seniors are 80 and over. Most California counties will see at least a 100 °l° increase in the elderly, age 65 and older; and WHEREAS, one in four households in California is involved in care giving. Families in California provide 80°I° of all long-term care for seniors in their homes. Nearly 57% of caregivers are age 65 and older. Fifty-three percent of caregivers under age 65 are juggling work, rearing families and care giving; and WHEREAS, to meet the needs of older Californians, the first Healthy Aging Summit will be held October 15 and 16, 2001 at the Sacramento Convention Center. Open to the public, this conference aims to demystify the process of aging, and to offer practical ways by which to prevent and minimize the debilitating long-term effects of aging. The Elder Services Planning Project of Butte County supports the Healthy Aging Summit and will send representatives; and WHEREAS, the participants will have the opportunity to exchange information and to discuss what additional services may be needed to preserve and improve the health of older Californians. Sessions will provide information about health, mental health, services and community resources for older adults; education credits for professionals working in the area of geriatrics and gerontology; a forum for individuals, local and state advocacy organizations, health care professionals and health policy makers to discuss the needs, challenges and opportunities of an increasing elderly population in our state and county; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors to support Helen M. Thomson, Assemblywoman, Eighth District, Chair, Assembly Health Committee in recognizing October 15 and 16, 2001 as Healthy Aging Days in Galifornia by recognizing those dates as Healthy Aging Days in Butte County. These days are an opportunity for older Californians to take time for their own health needs and for our state and county to promote support activities that foster healthy aging. Healthy Aging Summit 2001 will increase public awareness of aging issues, educate older adults as knowledgeable medical consumers and health advocates for themselves and their families, and encourage seniors to take advantage of community resources in order to protect their own personal health.
