Resolution No
RESOLUTION HONORING THE LAO VETERANS OF AMERICA
WHEREAS, from 1961 to 197, the Special Guerrilla Units (SGUs) of Lao people
called the Laotian (Hmong), under the command of Major General Yang Pao, were recruited,
trained, and employed by the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency in special missions during the
Vietnam War; and
WHERF,AS, the I,ao, Hmong, Micn and Khmu SC_ii_Js assisted the United States by
rescuing downed airmen, collecting intelligence, engaging, sabotaging and interdicting North
Vietnamese troops and supplies infiltrating through Laos and along the Ho-Chi Minh Trail, and
combating the Communist Pathet Lao forces, and
WHEREAS, the Lao, Ilmong, Mien and Khmu soldiers were killed and countless others
wounded while fighting for and with the United States armed farces during the Vietnam Velar and
the U. S. Secret War in Laos; and
WHEREAS, due to their loyalty to the United States during the Vietnam War, many of
the Lao, Hmong, Mien and Khmu veterans and their families fled Laos to avoid persecution.
imprisonment or death and were relocated to the United States and other countries as political
refugees; and
WHEREAS, the SCrU veterans have truly demonstrated their loyalty and great sacrifices
on bchall~ of the united States and deserve our long overdue recognition and appreciation fur
their services; and
WHEREAS, the veterans and their families have endeavored to become citizens and join
the mainstream. society ;and
WHEREAS, these veterans and their families have become an integral part of the
citizenry of Butte County; and
WHEREAS, the Lao Veterans of America. Inc., represents the interests of the SUU
veterans actively working to help its members integrate into the American society. and
WHEREAS, the Lao Veterans of America, Inc., has established a regional office in
Butte County; and
WHEREAS, it is important for the CTnited States to honor its obligations to those who
have unselfishly supported and sacrificed for our nation.
N()~'4', THF:RI?FORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors ol~the County
ol~ Butte does hereby proudly salute the Lao, E-Imong. I~'lien and Khmu SGU veterans of the
[_lnited States and the special consideration and recognition of the many sacrifices they made for
our government in the name of freedom and democracy durin~~ the Vietnam War and the U. S.
Secret War in Laos.
