WHEREAS, in 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation recognizing May 15`x' each year as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May I5`~' falls as "Police Week'"; and WHEREAS, a memorial was created in Washington D.C. to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and, with the tragedies of September 11°', over 200 officers will be memorialized this year; and WHEREAS, on July 2fi, 2001, Deputy Bill Hunter and Lieutenant Larry Estes were killed in the line of duty in the town of [nskip while protecting the citizens of Butte County; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Estes and Deputy Hunter will be memorialized this May I S`h in Washington D.C. as two deputies who lost their lives in the line of duty. Their names will join Deputy Randy .Iennings who was killed in 1997 wt7ile performing his duties as a deputy sheriff. NOV4r', THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15`x' as Peace Officers" Memorial Day and the week of May 13-17, 2002, as Police Week in Butte County: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes the significant contributions of Deputy Sheriffs in Butte County and the ultimate sacrifice Lt. Estes and Deputy Htnlter gave in protecting the citizens of Butte County.
