S-A-DAY WEEK, AND SEPTEMBER AS NATIONAL. S-A- DAY MONTH WHEREAS, diets rich in fruits and vegetables are important to public health because consumption of five or more servings daily may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, of major cancers, and of heart attack and stroke; and WHF,REAS, much. of the chronic disease burden is preventable; and WHEREAS, chronic diseases account for seven of every ten U.S. deaths and for more than 60 percent of medical care expenditures; and WHEREAS, only one-fourth of U.S. adults and less than 20 percent of young people eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day; and WHEREAS, poor dietary practices in children are associated with iron deficiency anemia, obesity, high blood pressure and contributes to school absenteeism, diminished readiness to learn, and poor school performance; and WHEREAS, the Farm, Home and 4-H Office, OPT for Fit Kids, the Children's California 5-a-Day Power Play! Campaign, Growing Healthy Children Coalition, and American Cancer Society join forces to raise awareness and to educate all citizens to meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for fruit and vegetable consumption and increased physical activity. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim September 2002 as National S-a-Day Month and September 22-28, 2002, as National S-a-Day Week, and encourages all citizens to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables to a minimum of five servings a day, and to increase physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of diet related chronic disease, and to work to create environments in which practicing these behaviors is both easy and acceptable.
