RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF RAY ROBERTS
UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE
GRIDLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
WHEREAS, Ray Roberts was born in Dawn, Missouri, on August 7, 1913, to David and
Olwen Roberts; and
WHEREAS, Ray graduated from Red Bhlff High School in 1931, and from Chico State
in 1936; and
WHEREAS, in 1936, at the age of 23, Mr. Roberts was employed by the Gridley Unified
School District as a math and physical education teacher at Woodrow Wilson School for $1,400
a year. Ray then spent 12 years at Gridley High School where he taught physical education and
was a sports coach; and
WHEREAS, in 1943, Ray's service was interrupted when he was drafted into the Air
Force, serving the majority of his three years of service at George Air Force Base in Victorville,
directing calisthenics to the bombardiers; and
WHEREAS, upon his return. to Gridley, Ray taught at Gridley High School, and in 1954
he went to Sycamore School, teaching the 8tf' grade. In 1955 Ray accepted the position of
principal, a position he held for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, Ray considered retiring at the age of 60 but was asked to stay on and work
on attendance issues, Thirty years later, Ray Roberts will be retiring on August ~, 2003, his 90`h
birthday; and
WHEREAS, it is a great pleasure to see this level of dedication to thousands of students
in Butte County, spanning at least three generations; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board, on its own behalf and on
behalf of the residents of the County of Butte, would like to express its deep appreciation to Ray
Roberts for his support and contributions to the citizens of this county, and further wish him well
on his retirement.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 22"`~ day of
July 2003 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Dolan, Houx, Jasiassen, Yamaguchi and Chair Beeler
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
NOT VOTING: None
