Graves for his 27 years as a law enforcement officer with the Butte County Sheriff's Office upon his retirement May 3, 2003; and WHEREAS, Richard Graves began his law enforcement career with the Butte County Sheriffs Office in 1976 as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. In 1977 and 1978 he received the honor of Reserve Peace Olticer of the Year. Deputy Graves worked as a Resident Deputy in the Forbestown/ Feather Fails/Brush Creek/Berry Creek areas. A noticeable decrease in the amount of criminal activity in this area can only be attributed to Deputy Graves' constant presence in the area. IIe made numerous arrests and was instrumental in initiating investigations relating to clandestine methamphetamine labs; and WHEREAS, in 1.993 Deputy Graves was appointed Deputy Sheriff and attended the Butte College P olice A cademy and w as a signed t o t he Designated A rea D eputy (D.A.D.) P rogram. I n 1995 Deputy Graves received the Peace Officer of the Year Award; and WHEREAS, in 1997 Deputy Graves graduated from FBI Bomb Training and was assigned to the Butte County Sheriff's Office EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Team. In 1998 Deputy Graves was assigned to the Investigations Division, and in June of 1998 transferred to the Civil Division where he worked as the OIC (Officer in Charge} in the absence of the Civil Sergeant. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors, on its own behalf and on the behalf of the residents of the County of Butte, recognizes Deputy Graves for his 27 years of dedicated service to the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Richard's calm, quiet, professional demeanor has earned him the respect of the citizens he has served as well as fellow staff members. He is a positive role model to everyone he comes in contact with.
