RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY
WHEREAS, on July 18, 1979, the first commemoration was held to honor America's
FOW/MIAs, those returned and those still missing and unaccounted for from our nation's wars; and
WHEREAS, throughout our history approximately one hundred and forty thousand members
of our armed forces have been forced to endure captivity and more than eighty-eight thousand have
disappeared into the smoke and chaos of battle whose fate has never been resolved; and
WHEREAS, the grief and pain felt by the families of those missing in action remains an
unhealed wound not only for them but for the nation as a whole; and
WHEREAS, the President of the United States has proclaimed that the third Friday of each
September shall be designated as an annual recognition of the sacrifices made in combat by those
who have not returned; and
WHEREAS, National POWIMIA Kecognition Day is a day to remind us that many captive
Americans were deprived of their freedom, treated with contempt and brutality, or used as political
pawns by their captors, have fought long, lonely battles against despair, physical and psychological
abuse, and the ultimate feeling ofbeing forgotten.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors
hereby proclaims the third Friday of every September of each year as National POWIMIA
Recognition Day.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of S upcrvisors on this 9`'' day of
September 2003 by the following vote:

ABSENT: None
NOT VOTING: None
