HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-022.r ~,~T'Y ~ #TT<C, ST~1T~ QF` ~.IFt~RRt~~ ~r ~` a Resolution No. o4-ozz RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF ELDON, WENDELL, HARLANAND HOMER LUNDBERG FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS rI'O THE RICE INDUSTRY WHEREAS, after years of enduring the Dust Bowl in the 1930'x, Albert and Frances Lundberg left Western Nebraska in 1937 with their four sons, Eldon, Wendell, Harlan, and Homer; and WHEREAS, Albeit took his family to Richvale and began a life of farming in Northern California; and WHEREAS, he believed in ecological farming long before it was fashionable, and always believed that he should leave the soil better than he found it; and WHEREAS, the four Lundberg brothers, who now run Lundberg Family Farms, were deeply influenced by their father; and WHEREAS, the Lundbergs carry on the belief that a healthy soil will produce healthy food; and WHEREAS, they have spent decades experimenting and investing in the development of farming practices; and WHEREAS, in the 1960's, a macrobiotic food group from Chico approached the brothers and asked them to grow organic short-grain rice; and WHEREAS, the Lundbergs built a small mill and marketed their rice in SO-pound bags up and down the West Coast; and WHEREAS, in 1975, they developed their own line of rice cakes, using the broken rice that was a by-product of whole-grain rice; and WHEREAS, today, they market more than a dozen varieties in more than 130 different products, from whole-grain rice to desserts and cereals; and WHEREAS, for more than 30 years, they have been at the forefront of growing organic rice, forging new techniques for them to ultimately be successful at organic farming; and WHh;RI?AS, they built their fanY~ and company on values of honesty and integrity, treating others as you would want to be treated, paying a good day's wage for a hard day's work, continuous self-improvement, and excellence in reputation; and WHEREAS, the brothers built their company with the idea that their employees work with them, not for them; and WHEREAS, Lundberg Family Farms produces between 12 and 15 varieties of rice each year and developed WEHANI, the industry's only aromatic colored rice; and WHEREAS, they have developed a thriving market for a variety of organic rice products; and WHEREAS, Eldon, Wendell, Harlan and Homer have been honored by Syngenta, Rice Furnain~~ magazine, and the USA Rice Federation with a Rice Lifetime Achievement Award. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Board, on its own behalf, and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte, would like to express its deep appreciation to the Lundberg brothers for their contributions to the rice industry and to this county, and wish them well in their future endeavors.
