HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-058E3a~RD QF SUPERViSQRS C~DUNTY OF .BUTTE,,, STATE OF CALIFORNIA I~esolufion No. 04-058 RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF BUTTE COUNTY'S "MOTHER ORANGE TREE" WHEREAS, in 1856 Judge Joseph Lewis purchased an orange tree seedling in Sacramento and had it planted at Bidwell's Bar on the Feather River; and WHEREAS, although this tree has been moved and replaced twice since its original planting, it is still living and is recognized as the oldest living orange tree in the State of California; and WHEREAS, the seeds from this orange tree have propagated numerous orange trees in Butte County and elsewhere, and it has become known as the "Mother Orange Tree"; and WHEREAS, the "Mother Orange Tree" is an important part of Butte County history. All efforts should be made to preserve it for future generations to enjoy; and WHEREAS, in order to preserve the genetic heritage of the Mother Orange Tree, two scions from the original tree have been planted in the City of Oroville. One of them at the Butte County Historical Society Museum, and the other one at Sank Park; and WHEREAS, this event has been brought about through the efforts of the Butte County Historical Society and the City of Oroville Parks Department; and WHEREAS, the ribbon cutting cere-nony commemorating this historical planting will occur on May 1, 2004. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes the Mother Orange Tree as an important part of Butte County's heritage.
