HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-196RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF rl'I-iE COUNTY OF BUTTE IN OPPOSITION TO MEASURE D - A PROPOSED COUNTYWIDE BAN ON GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS WHEREAS, Measure D, which asks voters whether the County of Butte should ban genetically modified organisms, will appear an the November 2, 2004 Countywide ballot; and WHEREAS, the National Academy of Scientists, the American Medical Association and the World Elealth Organization all understand, see the value of and support genetic engineering; and WHEREAS, genetic engineering is leading to reduced costs far many medications and is helping in the battle to find cures for deadly diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's, AIDS and cancer; and WHEREAS, the County's budget has already been stretched to the limit by virtue of the cost of providing basic public safety and other necessary services to the pubiie; and WHEREAS, Measure D designates the Butte Caunty Agricultural Commissioner as the County official authorized to enforce its provisions; and WHEREAS, the Butte County Agricultural Commissioner has estimated that Measure D will cost the County over $100,000tycar; and WHEREAS, adoption of Measure D will result in hardships to farmers and families by denying Butte Caunty farmers the technology they need to compete in a world marketplace. NOW, THEREFORE, I3E IT KESOLVED, that: 1. The Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte opposes Measure D; 2. However, no County revenue, nor public resources of any kind shall be expended in support of a campaign against Measure D, nor in support of a campaign for or against any ballot measure or candidate. PASSEll AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, on the 26`x' day of (Jctober 2004 by the following votes: AYES: Supervisors Dolan, Houx, Josiassen, Yamaguchi and Chair Beeler NOES: None ABSENT: None NOT VOTING: None K.
