Settle 75 years ago during the depths of the Great Depression with the goal of relieving the economic hardships suffered by retired teachers and has since become a leading advocate for providing teachers with sufficient retirement income; and WHEREAS, the California Retired Teachers Association also provides continuing support to active and future teachers, including scholarships of nearly $400,000 a year; and WHEREAS, a vast majority of California's retired teachers share a commitment to improve their communities through volunteer activities; and WHEREAS, when the President called on all Americans to give more of their time to volunteer service, retired teachers led by example, including dozens of members who have given more than 4,000 hours of services; and WHEREAS, retired teachers can be found serving their communities by volunteer tutoring, mentoring students and adults, helping in public and school libraries, service as hospital and hospice aides, providing transportation for the less able, collecting food and clothing for the needy, publishing newsletters for various civic and religious organizations, and volunteering for city and county activities; and WHEREAS, here in Butte County in 2003 California Retired Teachers Association members reported 24,557 hours of volunteer service which would have a value of $394,134; the annual dollar value of this volunteer time throughout the state exceeded $30 million; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that in recognition of the vital role retired teachers fulfill in every community in California, and to honor their ongoing commitment to all teachers, the Butte County Board of Supervisors declare the week of November 7-13, 2004, be proclaimed as California Retired Teachers Week. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, Sate of California, on this ninth day of November 2004 by the following votes: AYES: Supervisors Houx, Josiassen, Yamaguchi and Chair Beeler NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisor Dolan NOT VO i'ING: None r~1 '~,~ ' ~,= R.
