RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A POLICY
TO ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO PURCHASE
RETIRED CANINE. UMT DOGS
WHEREAS, the Butte County Sheriff s Office has operated a canine unit for a number of
years and the canine dogs have a useful working life of approximately 5-7 years upon which time
the Sheriff may deem the dog retired and
WHEREAS, the Sheriffs Office needs to adopt a policy to allow proper transferal of
ownership of retired department canines and
WHEREAS, the canine handler has developed a long term relationship with the dog and
it is most appropriate to allow the retired Canine Unit dogs be purchased and retained by the
Butte County Sheriffs Canine Unit Deputy who has handled the dog during its career and
WHEREAS, the dog no longer has value to the Sheriffs Office it is recommended the
handler purchase the retired dog for $1.00 upon signing the purchase agreement entitled Butte
County Sheriffls Office Canine Unit Dog Purchase Agreement.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Sheriff-s Oftce may
sell the retired canine unit dog for one dollar to the dog's handler upon entering into the purchase
agreement signed by the CAO, Sheriff and purchaser.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors this 12`h day of April by the
following vote:

CANINE UNIT DOG PURCHASE AGREEMENT
THIS PURCHASE AGREEMENT is made and entered into on
By and between the County of Butte (COUNTY) and
(date)
An individual employed in the County's Sheriffs Office (PURCHASER).
WHEREAS, effective the following Sheriff s Office
Canine Unit Dog was officially retired from the Butte County Sheriff's Office
Canine Unit:

Color:
Sex:
Date Placed in Service:
Condition:
WHEREAS, PURCHASER has requested to purchase the Canine Unit Dog for the sum of $1.00.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY AGREED THAT the Canine Unit Dog, described above, is sold
to PURCHASER for the sum of $1.00 and is no longer the responsibility of the COUNTY; and
IT IS FURTHER AGREED, that from the date of this Purchase Agreement forward PURCHASER shall
hold the COUNTY free and harmless from any and all liability which the COUNTY may or might suffer
as a result of injury to persons or property caused by the Canine Unit Dog which may occur
subsequent to the date of the Purchase Agreement, as ownership of the Canine Unit Dog is hereby
transferred to and accepted by PURCHASER.
