HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-057RESOLUTION DECLARING APRIL 24 THROUGH APRIL 30, 2006, WEST NILE VIRUS AND MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL AWARENESS WEEK IN BUTTE COUNTY WHEREAS, in 2005, West Nile Virus killed 18 people in California and sickened over 900 individuals; and WHEREAS, the State Department of Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control predict West Nile Virus poses a grave public health threat in California in 2006; and WHEREAS, adequately funded mosquito and vector control, disease surveillance, and public awareness programs are the best way to prevent outbreaks of West Niie Virus and other diseases borne by mosquitoes and other vectors; and WHEREAS, educational programs have been developed to include schools, civic groups, private industry, and government agencies, in order to help the public understand how to protect themselves from West Niie Virus by :staying indoors when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk; wearing pants, long sleeved shirts and repellents containing DEET; eliminating standing water than can support mosquito breeding, and alerting the local vector control district to significant mosquito infestations; and WHEREAS, "West Nile Virus and Mosquito and Vector Control Awareness Week" will increase the public's awareness of the threat of West Nile Virus and other diseases and the activities of the mosquito and vector research and control agencies and their professional staff working to minimize the health threat within California, and will highlight the education programs currently available; and WHEREAS, the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California has designated the Week of April 24 through Apri130, 200b, as "West Nile Virus and Mosquito and Vector Control Awareness Week" in the State of California. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by Butte County Board of Supervisors that the week of April 24 through April 30, 2006, be designated as "West Nile Virus and Mosquito and Vector Control Awareness Week" in Butte County.
