RESOLUTION OF THE BUTTE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
IN SUPPORT OF RETURNING FUNDING TO THE
CALFIORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION (CDF)
FOR STAFFING LOOKOUT TOWERS IN CALIFORNIA
WHEREAS, the State of California provided funding through the California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) for lookout towers throughout California, including Butte
County, through the fire season of 2002; and
WHEREAS, Fire Departments throughout the State depend upon lookout towers for
early detection of new fires; for real time intelligence regarding the status and behavior of fires;
and for verification of location; and
WHEREAS, lookout towers provide real time information on the intensity of a fire,
smoke conditions, updated locations and real time weather assessments during fire incidents.
This information from a "birds eye view" helps fire managers determine equipment needs and
safety considerations, especially when wind conditions change; and
WHEREAS the outcomes related to lookout tower services include smaller wildfires and
increased efficiencies for fire agencies, as fire managers can quickly increase or decrease a
response based on the real time information provided from the lookout; and
WHEREAS the lookout towers are so important to fire protection in the area of Butte
County referred to as the Ridge Area (Paradise, Magalia, Stirling City) that local residents have
raised funds to pay for staffing of one lookout tower during peak fire season for the past two
years; and
WHEREAS the cost for staffing lookout towers is minimal when you look at the entire
CDF budget, yet its importance as afire-fighting tool is immense.
NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Butte
County encourages State legislators to vote in favor of returning funding to the California
Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) for staffing lookout towers throughout the
State.
