HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-088RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2007, AS "PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE WEEK OF MAY 13-19 AS "POLICE WEEK" WHEREAS, in 1994 the President signed a proclamation recognizing May 15`" each year as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 15`" falls as "Police Week" to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line-of--duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every 53 hours and 17,900 officers have been killed to date; and WHEREAS California has the highest death rate of any state with 1,420 officers killed in the line of duty and in 2006, twelve California Peace Officers died in the line-of--duty. Nationally, 382 died while protecting their communities. The twelve California officers will be memorialized on May 3`d in Sacramento and all 382 will be memorialized on May 15`" in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, in a five-year time span, the Butte County Sheriffs Office lost three deputies in the line-of duty; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15`" as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 13-19, 2007, as Police Week in Butte County; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 103-322 directing the flag be flown at half staff on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a Tuesday.
