OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL NAMING OF AMERICA
WHEREAS, 2007 marks the 500`'' birthday of the geographical naming of
America, North and South, as separate land masses; and
WHEREAS, in 1507, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemueller
published the first map of the globe to depict the continents of America, North and
South, along with Asia and Europe, and the first depiction and deduction of the
image of a western ocean, now known as the Pacific Ocean; and
WHEREAS, the name of America first appeared on what are now the
coasts of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina in recognition of Florentine
astronomer-explorer Amerigo Vespucci for his scientific contributions to
planetary knowledge; and
WHEREAS, the map was printed for students to construct a sphere to study
as a learning tool, used in astronomy, geography, climate, botany, transportation
routes and cultural settlement; and
WHEREAS, residents in the County of Butte are encouraged to come
together to recognize the importance of the "America500 Birthday" to focus
public attention on how Martin Waldseemueller named America and improve
planetary understanding.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County
Board of Supervisors hereby authorizes the Chair to recognize 2007 as the SOOcn
birthday of the geographical naming of America.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 22°d day of
May 2007 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Connelly, Kirk, Josiassen, Yamaguchi, and Chair Dolan
