RESOLUTION PKOCLAIMING MAY 15, 2008, AS "PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY"
AND THE WEEK OF MAY 11-17 AS "POLICE WEEK"
WHEREAS, in 1994 the President signed a proclamation recognizing May I S`~' each year as
"Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 15`'' falls as "Police Week" to honor law
enforcement officers killed in the line-of=duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty
every 53 hours and 17,900 officers have been killed to date; and
WHEREAS, in 2007 nine California Peace Officers died in the line-of--duty and181 officers
died nationally while protecting their communities. This is a 20% increase over the prior year with the
leading cause of death being traffic-related incidents; although officers killed by gunfire increased by
26% over the prior year. 'The nine California officers will be memorialized on May 9th in Sacramento
and all 181 will be memorialized on May 15`~ in Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, in a five-year time span, the Butte County Sheriffs Offiee lost three deputies in
the line-of duty. We are researching two additional line-of--duty deputy deaths dating back to 1959 and
1934 and are pursuing recognition of these deputies to be memorialized on both the California and
National Memorial Walls; and
WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty
and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are
flown on personal ears and patrol cars during Police Week.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby
proclaims May 15`x' as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 1 1-17, 200$, as Police Week
in Butte County;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public
law 103-322 directing the flag be flown at half staff on all County buildings on Peace Officers'
Memorial Day which falls on a Thursday.
