WHEREAS, as a society, we have a responsibility to nurture and protect our
children and help ensure they become healthy and productive adults; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control now ranks child abuse as America's
number one public health crisis: and
WHEREAS, a child is reported as abused in California every minute of every
day; and
WHEREAS, scientif c studies confirm a direct link between child abuse and a
signif cantly greater risk later in life for divorce, substance abuse, crime, suicide and
premature death from cancer and other serious illnesses; and
WHEREAS, child abuse harms millions of lives and costs taxpayers an estimated
95 billion annually; and
WHEREAS, as individuals, we can help nurture and protect the children of this
community by supporting parents and caregivers, and remembering it only takes a minute
to brighten a child's life with praise, encouragement, and love; -and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of
Supervisors recognizes the invaluable service that the Child Abuse Prevention Council of
Butte County provides to the children and families in Butte County on a daily basis and
in Child Abuse Prevention Month; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we reaffirm our dedication to preventing
child abuse and protecting our community's children; and we reaffirm the value of
parenting, acknowledge it can sometimes be challenging, and encourage parents to ask
for help when needed; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we ask the citizens of Butte County to join
us in providing parents with encouragement and support, and to do all they can to help
nurture and protect our children -our future and most cherished resource.
RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION COUNCIL
OF BUTTE COUNTY AND CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte,
State of California, this S`h day of May, 2009 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Dalan, Kirk, Lambert, Yamaguchi, and Chair Connelly
