Whereas, the Richvale Land Company officers L. M. Culver, President; L. V. Graves, Vice
President; S. T. Axtell, Vice President; and S. A. Robinson, Secretary engaged the services of the L. A. Batham
Engineering fixm of Chico, California to survey, lay out and print a plot map of the town of Richvale during
October and November 1909; and
Whereas, the Richvale Land Company officers and their agents began soliciting farmers primarily from
the Midwestern States of Kansas, Nebraska and Minnesota to pull up stakes and purchase farm land (as quoted
from their brochure). "In the Valley of Sacrarnento, the richest Valley in the world;" and
Whereas, in the immediate years that followed beginning in 1911, many settlers arrived to find that the
heavy Stockton Clay adobe soils were not suitable for crops they had grown in the Midwest. Winter rain,
muddy roads and crap failures caused many to become discouraged and leave to include most of the principal
Land Company officers by the year 191 S; and
Whereas, rice, a new crop to California adaptable to the adobe soil and introduced in 1912 became the
salvation for those who stayed. A formidable task remained however in the need to establish infrastructure,
improved roads, irrigation and drainage systems adaptable to rice culture; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognize those
men and women who worked hard to make Richvale what it is today and do hereby proclaim June 27, 2009 to
be the 100th year "Centennial Celebration" of the founding of Richvale.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, this
9th day of 3une, 2009 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Dolan, Kirk, Lambert, Yamaguchi, and Chair Connelly
