WHEREAS, the County of Butte values reading, reflection and action in support of
building a sense of community, strengthening literacy and advancing the common good;
WHEREAS, programs such as reading a Book in Common across the country have been
shown to enhance community and foster dialogue on important social, political and
personal questions;
WHEREAS, Butte County Library and Department of Behavioral Health, California
State University, Chico, Associated Students at CSU, Chico, Butte Community College,
City of Chico, City of Oroville, Chico Unified School District, Enloe Hospital, Barnes
and Noble Bookseller, Lyon's Books, and local citizens in book clubs around our County
have selected the book, The Soloist: a Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the
Redemptive Power of Music, by Steve Lopez, as the Book in Common;
NOW, THEREFORE, SE IT RESOLVED, by the Butte County Board of Supervisors
that The Soloist will be the Book in Common for the County of Butte in 2009-2010.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of
California, on this day of by the following vote:
