RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 2010 AS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
MONTH
WHEREAS, as a society, we have a responsibility to nurture and protect our children and help
ensure they become healthy and productive adults;
WHEREAS, the centers for Disease Control now ranks child abuse as America's number one
public health crisis;
WHEREAS, a child is reported abused in California every minute of every day;
WHEREAS, scientific studies conlarm a direct link between child abuse and a significantly
greater risk later in Iife for divorce, substance abuse, crime, suicide and premature death from
cancer and other serious illnesses;
WHEREAS, child abuse harms millions of lives and costs taxpayers an estimated 95 billion
annually;
WHEREAS, as individuals, we can help nurture and protect the children of this community by
supporting parents and caregivers, and remembering it only takes a minute to brighten a child's
life with praise, encouragement, and love;
WHEREAS, we ask the citizens of Butte County to join us in providing parents with
encouragement and support, and to do all they can to help nurture and protect our children -our
future and most cherished resource.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby proclaim the
month of Apri12010 as Child Abuse Awareness Month.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Boazd of Supervisors this 30th day of March,
2010 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Dolan, Kirk, Lambert, Yamaguchi and Chair Conrelly
NOES: None
ABSENT: None

Re: Proclamation for Child Abuse Prevention Month
Dear Board of Supervisors:
As you may akeady 1a~ow, April is officially designated CHILD ABUSE
PREVENTION MONTH, which gives our community an opportunity to focus our'=
_. attention on a very profound tragedy. Many children are still being abused daily. Aside
-from tli~ immediate damage abuse and neglect causes, many of those who survive the `~~~<<
. abuse suffer in later life ~; ; ,
~`he Child Abuse .Prevention Council of Butte County provides prevention advocate~'~ ~:
~' a chance to join togetlie~ and coordinate their efforts to solve~thi's problem in Butte ~: :.::~:
County. We are pleased with the commitment the Board of Supervisors has made to
programs assisting families in Butte County. It is a colossal task. We are honored to work
hand and hand with the Board and fund many needed services to assist families through
our efforts in the Frank Wafters and Mary Anne Houx Children's Fund.
So, we aze asking you to make an off cial proclamation designating April Child
Abuse Prevention Month in our community. A representative from the Council would
be honored to pick up a proclamation from the Board. Please inform us of the date and
time.
