RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2010, AS "PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY"
AND THE WEEK OF MAY 9-15 AS "POLICE WEEK"
WHEREAS, in 1962, the member's of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15~'
each year as "Feace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 15`x` falls as "Police Week" to
honor law enforcement officers killed in the line-of--duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the
line of duty every 53 hours and California is the third deadliest state for law enforcement officers killed
in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, in 2009 six California Peace Off cers died in the line-o:F duty and 1 i 6 officers died
nationally while protecting their cammunities. The six California officers were memorialized on May
7th in Sacramento and alI 116 will be memorialized on May 15~' in Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, in a five-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three deputies in
the line-af duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001; and
WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty
and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are
flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby
proclaims May 15a` as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 9-15, 2010, as Police Week
in Butte County. The Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the
flag be flown at half staff on all County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a
Saturday.

2010 by the following vote:
