HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-084Resolution Resolution Recognizing of National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Montlx WHEREAS, teen pregnancy is a serious problem that significantly impacts the health and well-being of teenagers, their families and the community at large; and WHEREAS, nearly 750,000 U.S. teens get pregnant each year and the teen birthrate in the U.S. is on the rise, ending a 14 year decline in teen pregnancy statistics according to a report published last year by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); and WHEREAS, the teen birthrate in California reached a record low in 2008, according to a recent report released by the State Department of Public Health due to community efforts and the state's unique teen pregnancy prevention programs; and WHEREAS, we are proud that the teen birthrate in Butte County was significantly lower than the statewide average but there is still much work to do; and WHEREAS, teen mothers are less likely to receive prenatal care, complete high school or receive a college degree and more likely to live in poverty than those who delay childbearing; and WHEREAS, the children of teen mothers are more likely to be born prematurely and at low birth weight, grow up in poverty, experience abuse and neglect, and enter the child welfare system than the children of those who delay motherhood; and WHEREAS, providing comprehensive and medically accurate family planning education in Butte County high schools and middle schools will decrease teen pregnancy and encourage teens to abstain; and WHEREAS, there are many agencies that work with the teens of Butte County to provide health education that empowers them to make healthy life decisions; and WHEREAS, we must continue to work together to address the teen pregnancy health care crisis and reduce unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Butte County does hereby recognize the month of May 2010 as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.
