HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-096RESOLUTION IN ,APPRECIATION OF JAMES CALLAS Whereas, this Board expresses its appreciation to Undersheriff James Callas for his 39 and a half years of dedicated service to public safety law enforcement. Whereas, Jim Callas began his law enforcement career with the Los Angeles County SherifF's Office as a deputy sheriff in 1965. Jim rapidly excelled up the ranks of the world's largest law enforcement agency promoting to sergeant, lieutenant, captain and finally division chief. During Jim's career he managed to gain experience and work many units including the training bureau, jail division, emergency services detail, special enforcement bureau, investigations, and commander of the Temple Station a major facility providing full services to over 189,000 residents. Tn Jim's "spare time" he obtained his undergraduate degree and later his graduate degree from the University of Southern California. Jim can still hum the USC fight song when prompted. In 1996 and after 31 years of service, Jim decided to retire from the Las Angeles County Sheriff's Office as a division chief and moved to Butte County. Retirement didn't serve him well and so Jim returned to public safety working a grant as an investigator with fine District Attorney's Office from August 2001 through September 2002. On January 18, 2003, Sheriff Perry Reniff appointed Jim to be second irz command as the Butte County Sheriff s Office UndersherifF. Jim Callas held the position of Undersheriff for seven and a half years. During Jim's tenure as Undersherifl'he instilled confidence in staff with his tremendous experience and professional demeanor. Jim proved to be a strong mentor to many, an accessible and practical leader, a friend, a confidant, an excellent manager and strong problem solver. Jim was instrumental in restructuring the Sheriffs Office to create centralized budgeting and contract management as well as being a strong advocate of the Sheriff's Information System's Department and the importance of technology. Undersheriff Callas brought the non-sworn professional staff to the Sheriff s management table with an equal voice. Whereas, after serving the citizens of Butte County for eight and a half years, Jim Callas is retiring on June 30, 2010 and will be sorely missed. NOW, THEREFORE, SE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors on its own behalf, and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte: That said Board expresses their deep appreciation for the unselfish dedication, professionalism and devotion given by Undersheriff James Callas during his career with the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
