HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-047~esoIution RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2011, AS "PEACE OFFICER'S MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE WEEK OF MAY I3-17 AS "POLICE WEEK" WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 1 Sch each year as "Peace Off cers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 1 Sth falls as "Police Week" to honor law enforcement off cers killed in the line-of--duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every S3 hours and California is the third deadliest state for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This year, Butte County marks the ten year anniversary of the loss of two deputies in one incident; and WHEREAS, in 2010 eleven California Peace Officers died in the line-of--duty and 162 officers died nationally while protecting their communities; this is an 83% state increase and a 38% increase in national officer deaths. The eleven California officers were memorialized on May 2nd in Sacramento and all 162 will be memorialized on May 1 Sth in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, in a four-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff s Office lost three deputies in the line-of duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001 marking a ten year anniversary for Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cams and patrol cars during Police Week. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 1S`~' as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 13-17, 2011, as Police Week in Butte County. The Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half staff on all County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a Sunday.
