HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-041RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING APRIL 22-28, 2012 AS NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK WHEREAS, as a nation devoted to liberty and justice for all, America must increase its efforts to protect, restore, and expand crime victims' rights and services so that they apply to every victim, every time; and WHEREAS, last year there were almost 19 million crimes in our country. An estimated 14,748 persons were murdered, victims age 12 or older experienced a total of 188,380 rapes or sexual assaults, 92,865 persons over the age of 65 were victims of violent crime; and WHEREAS, last year, from January to December, the Butte County Victim Witness Program filed claims with the state Victims' Compensation Board an behalf of 1,130 local crime victims. The total amount paid to victims totaled $1,107,419. Last year, victim witness advocates assisted 2,338 Butte County crime victims and witnesses; and WHEREA5, National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 22-28, 2012, offers us all the opportunity to recommit ourselves to ensuring that every victim is afforded his or her legal rights and treated as a crucial participant in our criminal justice system; and WHEREAS, despite significant progress in providing rights and services to crime victims aver the past two decades, large segments of our population, including children, the elderly, those with disabilities, immigrants, and victims in rural areas are still underserved; and WHEREA5, the Butte County Victim-Witness Assistance Center, criminal justice officials, and concerned citizens throughout Butte County and the nation designate this week to raise awareness of victims' rights and observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims the week of April 22-28, 2012 as National Crime Victims' Rights Week, and reaffirms the county's commitment to respect and enforce victims' rights and address their needs during Crime Victims' Rights Week and throughout the year; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Board expresses its appreciation of those victims and crime survivors who have turned personal tragedy into a motivating farce to improve the lives of other victims of crime and to help us build a more just community, PASSED AND ADOPTED, by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 24th day of April, 2012 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Wahl, Kirk, Yamaguchi and Chair Lambert NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisor Connelly NOT VOTING: Nane ~~ve Lambert, Chair
