RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2012, AS "PEACE OFFICER'S MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE WEEK OF
MAY 13-19 AS "PDI.ICE WEEK"
WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15`" each year as "Peace
Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 1St" falls as "Police Week" to honor law enforcement officers killed
in the line-of-duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every 53 hours and California is the third
deadliest state for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, in 2011 eight California Peace Officers died in the line-of-duty and 132 officers died nationally while
protecting their communities. The eight California officers were memorialized on May 7th in Sacramento and all 132 will
be memorialized on May 15t" in Washington D.C. California is the second deadliest State in the nation for sine of duty
deaths; and
WHEREAS, in a four-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's OfFice lost three deputies in the line-of duty,
Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Munter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001; and
WHEREA5, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of
support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and
patrol cars during Police Week. On Monday May 14t" at noon, the Sheriffs Office will host a wreath laying ceremony in
front of the Sheriff s Office and all are invited to attend.
NDW, THEREFORE, BE IT RE50LVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15t" as
Peace Officers' Memoria! Day and the week of May 13-19, 2012, as Police Week in Butte County. The Butte County
Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half-staff on all County buildings on
Peace Officers' Memoria! Day which falls on a Tuesday.
