A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE CDUNTY OF BUTTE PROCLAIMING
THE MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM AT THE SOUTHSIDE OROVILLE COMMUNITY CENTER
THE ANITA F. BELL MEMORIAL RODM
WHEREAS, Anita Bell was born in Oroville on August fi, 1945; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell was awell-known and well-loved resident of the Oroville community for 59 years
who passed away on November 27, 2004 in Oroville; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell was an advocate for many people in the Oroville community, especially youth,
seniors, and people living in economically deprived areas; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell believed that whenever a few people in a community are affected, the whole
community is affected, and advocated for and implemented many social service programs and provided
individual efforts to improve her community; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell can be credited with bringing the Oroville Express to Oroville; worked for the
Community Action Agency off and on over a 20-year period; was involved with the National Guard and the
National Association for Advancement of Colored People; was the first employee at the Del Norte Clinic, which
she worked to establish in Oroville; played a role in the local equal rights movement in the 1960's;
implemented many youth programs in Oroville; and worked with Chico State to start a program to bring youth
from low-income families to campus, which grew into the Upward Bound Program, just to name a few of her
achievements; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell, along with local pastors, was instrumental in organizing the Martin Luther King,
Jr. celebration in South Oroville that has grown over the years; and
WHEREAS, Anita Bell ended her conversation with others by saying: "Thank you, love ya, babe."; and
WHEREAS, members of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Steering Committee have requested that the
multi-purpose room at the Southside Oroville Community Center be recognized as the Anita F. Be!! Memorial
Room.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE lT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte supports the
naming of the multi-purpose room at the Southside Oroville Community Center in memory of Anita Bell for
her years of dedication to the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte grants permission to
have suitable signage created and placed identifying the room as the Anita F. Bell Memorial Raam.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors, of the County of Butte, State of California, at a
regular meeting of said Board, held on the 8th day of January, 2013, by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Connelly, Wahl, Kirk, i_ambert, Teeter
