HomeMy WebLinkAbout13-071~~~ ~~~i c~u~-rv o~ rau H ~ -rATE aF ` 1a Resolution No. 13-071 RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2012, AS "PEACE OFFICER'S MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE WEEK OF MAY 12-18 AS "POLICE WEEK" WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15th each year as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 15th falls as "Police Week" to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line-of-duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every 57 hours; and WHEREAS, in 2012 two California Peace Officers died in the line-of-duty and 120 officers died nationally while protecting their communities. The two California officers were memorialized on Monday May 6th in Sacramento and all 120 will be memorialized on May 15th in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week; and WHEREAS, in a four-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three deputies in the line-of duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001. On Tuesday May 14tH at noon, the Sheriff's Office will bast a public wreath laying ceremony in front of the Sheriff's Office to remember our three fallen brothers. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 12-18, 2013, as Police Week in Butte County. The Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half-staff on ail County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a Wednesday.
