RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MAY 1S, 2014,AS "PEACE OFFICER'S MEMORIAL DAY-AND THE WEEK OF
MAY 11-17 A `®POLICE EEK”
WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15th each year
as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day” and the week in which May 15th falls as "Police Week” to honor law
enforcement officers killed in the line-of-duty. In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every
57 hours; and
WHEREAS, in 2013 eight (8) California Peace Officers died in the line-of-duty and 111 officers died
nationally while protecting their communities. The eight California officers were memorialized on Monday
May 5th in Sacramento and all 111 will be memorialized on May 15th in Washington O.C. These memorial
ceremonies are a time to remember our indebtedness to the brave and dedicated Peace Officers who accept a
job that is difficult and dangerous; and
WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect and remembrance to those who have laid down their lives in the line
of duty and a show of support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons
are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week; and
WHEREAS, in a four-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three deputies in the line-of
duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001. Also killed in the line of duty
were Deputy Constable Minor in 1934 and Deputy Brown Jr in 1959. On Wednesday May 14th at noon, the
Sheriff's Office will host a public wreath laying ceremony in front of the Sheriff's Office to remember our five
fallen brothers.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes May
15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 11-17, 2014, as Police Week in Butte County. The
Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half-staff on all
County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a Thursday,
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 6th day of May 2014 by the following vote:
