RESOLUTION F THE U COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
RECOGNIZING MAY 2014 AS BUILDING SAFELY MONTH
WHEREAS, through continuing efforts to address critical issues of safety, energy efficiency, and
resilience in the built environment that affect the citizens of Butte County, both in everyday life and in times
of natural disaster, give us confidence that our structures are safe and sound, and;
WHEREAS, the International Code Council uses a governmental consensus process that brings
together local, state and federal officials with expertise in the built environment to create and implement the
highest-quality codes to protect Americans in the buildings where we live, learn, work, worship, play, and;
WHEREAS, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council, to remind the public
about the critical role of our communities' largely unknown guardians of public safety—our local code
officials—who assure us of safe, efficient and livable buildings, and;
WHEREAS,the International Codes, the most widely adopted building safety, energy and fire
prevention codes in the nation, are used by most U.S, cities, counties and states; these modern building codes
also include safeguards to protect the public from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorms,
tornadoes, wildland fires and earthquakes, and;
WHEREAS, in an ongoing effort to ensure that residents and individuals patronizing businesses within
Butte County are afforded the highest construction standards available, the Building Division is proud to
participate in Building SafetyMonth; and
WHEREAS, Building Safety Month emphasizes the important role the Building [division plays in the
development and maintenance of safe buildings in the community; and the Building Division is helping to
ensure the public's health, safety, and general well-being by reviewing building construction plans, issuing
building permits, and inspecting buildings during and after construction to ensure that they comply with the
minimum necessary health and safety regulations, and it is this preventative work that contributes to the
success of keeping occupants of the structure safe during an emergency, and
WHEREAS, for construction and building codes to be effective and enforced, understanding and
cooperation must exist between code officials and the people we serve; and
WHEREAS, through the untiring efforts of local building officials and their cooperative relationship with
the design and construction industry, the administration of these health and life–safety standards is assured;
and
WHEREAS, cities and counties across California are joining together to promote building safety through
the observation of Building Safety Month; and
WHEREAS, "Building Safety: Maximizing Resilience, Minimizing Risks" the theme for Building Safety
Month 2014, encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the importance of building safe and resilient
construction; fire prevention; disaster mitigation, backyard safety; energy efficiency and new technologies in
the construction industry. Building Safety Month 2014 encourages appropriate steps everyone can take to
ensure that the places where we live, learn, work, worship and play are safe and sustainable, and recognizes
that countless lives have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies,
and;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BE RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes
the month of May, 2014, as Building Safety Month and urges all citizens to participate in activities to help
promote building safety, to create awareness as to the importance of construction and building codes, and to
spotlight the role of dedicated code officials in administering these codes.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 6th day of May, 2014 by the
following vote:
