RESOLUTION
IN RECOGNITIONIFF JERRY W. SMITHUPON HIS
RETIREMENT FROM THE BUTTESHERIFFS OFFICE
WHEREAS, Sheriff Jerry W. Smith, has announced his retirement from the Butte County Sheriff's Office effective
May 24, 2014 after 36 years of dedicated service to the Citizens of Butte County, and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Smith began his career as a sworn [deputy Marshal, and in October of 1977 he became a
Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the Butte County Sheriffs Office and was hired by then Sheriff Larry Gillick as a full.-time
Deputy Sheriff at the age of 20 in March of 1978; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Smith was promoted to the rank of Sheriff's Sergeant in March of 1986; and was promoted to
Sheriff's Lieutenant in November of 1991, and then promoted to the rank of Sheriff's Captain in June of 2003; and
WHEREAS, As Operations commander, he administered the enforcement branch of the department, including
patrol, investigations,special enforcement, dispatch and aviation; and
WHEREAS, his experience includes assignments in corrections, patrol and investigations, where he was tasked
with investigating narcotics violations and other complex and violent crimes; and
EDEAS, Sheriff Smith served as the Tactical Commander for the Sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics Team
for eight years (1993 to 2001) and oversaw a number of high profile incidents which were brought to a successful
resolution; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Smith served as the Chief Pilot for the Sheriffs Office and holds commercial ratings for both
helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and has been instrumental in developing the Sheriffs Aviation Program, which is one
of the best law enforcement aviation programs in northern California; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Butte County Sheriffs Office, Sheriff Smith developed superior leadership
skills and earned Supervisory, Management and Executive Certificates issued by the California Commission on Peace
officers Standards and Training (POST) and is a graduate of the POST Executive Development Course; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Smith has worked tirelessly throughout his career serving our community and promoting
public safety with courage, discipline, and perseverance; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Smith has earned the respect and confidence of the Butte County Board of Supervisors,
County Administration, County Department {heads, his employees, and city, county, state, and community partners,
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors, on its own behalf and on behalf of the
citizens of Butte County, do wish to extend to Sheriff Jerry W. Smith sincere appreciation for his many years of
dedication and outstanding service to the Citizens of Butte County and further,to wish him well on his retirement.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors in a meeting thereof held on the 20th day of May,
2014, by the following vote:
